Fall Pictures/Herbstfotos

We have been having a woodpecker at our feeder recently.  It is a red-bellied one.
In letzter Zeit haben wir immer einen Specht, genauer gesagt, einen Carolinaspecht.

He takes a seed and then flies somewhere else to eat it.
Er nimmt sich einen Samen und fliegt dann damit weg, um ihn zu fressen.

I also drove Miriam to her cleaning job again: We passed the beach where we were swimming during the summer, but almost all the water is gone now.  The lake gets drained in October.

Some parts still have more water.
Einige Stellen haben noch mehr Wasser.

And then I showed Flora the dam where they let the water out.
Dann habe ich Flora den Damm gezeigt, wo das Wasser abgelassen wird.

It truly felt like fall.
Es war wirklich ein Herbsttag.

  1. I always enjoy your bird photos, and that is very interesting about the swimming lake.

    1. Oh, thanks, we do get interesting birds. This morning we had a nuthatch who must have thought he was a woodpecker. He hammered like crazy on our railing.

The lake was constructed to regulate the water in the Genesee River. The Genesee had caused bad floods in Rochester every seven years. The towns of East Rushford and Kellogville were flooded to make this lake a reality. With the help of this lake, the water level in the Genesee was regulated. Later, they built the Mount Morris Dam, which really stopped most of the bad floods in the area.

    2. Oh, that is very interesting about the lake . . so much to consider to alleviate flooding issues.

I read that nuthatches like to use abandoned crevices from woodpeckers to nest in, but that red breasted nuthatches peck their own, even though they're not built like woodpeckers to sustain the pounding!

    3. Yes, you never think much about where the water goes when you see water falls, lakes, rivers, etc.

Lazy nuthatches! Maybe ours did want to imitate the woodpecker also in his habits and not just "steal" the woodpeckers living quarters.
