"Fall Break"/"Herbstferien"

More beans from Flora's bean plant

We are doing one week of fall break this week.  Originally, I had planned to take a week off next week, but since Jonathan and Charlotte will be coming home on Thursday, I thought that this week makes more sense.  We are not doing formal schooling, but focus on some projects here at home and the neighborhood.  I cleaned and sorted a bookshelf in our bedroom and the girls raked leaves at the elderly lady's house across from us.  They were supposed to have art class today, but the teacher canceled the last minute because her grandson was in the hospital with a concussion.  I taught my German student in the afternoon (our college has a short break next week).  Miriam will spend tomorrow morning cleaning at another professor's house and in the afternoon, we will have ballet.  So it is not a complete break, but a modified week.

Peter removed some dandelion that was growing in our gutters.

Visiting the neighbor to rake her leaves.

  1. Your lovely card arrived yesterday it was just the thing - it was our wedding anniversary but we were having a difficult day with additional worries and it cheered me up no end ❤️

  2. Good work on the bookshelf, and it's nice that the girls can help your neighbor with her leaves. Flora's beans have been growing well!

    Dandelions will grow anywhere!

    1. Thank you, I finished a second one yesterday and today I have been working and sneezing in the room Flora sleeps in. She got the new bed, but the rest is just a mess and so dusty! I took down the children's table and chairs (very sad) and now we are sorting through Flora's treasures. She cannot throw anything away and it looks like an antique store up there (and a library with "old" documents). We are both sneezing like crazy, but it needs to get done.

The beans did very well, but the carrots not at all. Those dandelions must have loved our gutters: We found three plants at different spots. Now Peter has to climb the roof and clean them out. There are too many leaves up there.

    2. That's interesting that the carrots did not do well. I wonder if it had something to do with the soil or with the amount of rain .. or sunshine?

It's not easy sorting through one's treasures! It's not easy throwing things away, but we can't keep everything . . just like the kittens. They are all so cute but I can't keep them all! Congrats on the sorting again, and for taking down the children's table and chairs. I remember taking ours down too!

    3. P.S. My nephews do my brother-in-law's gutters now. They have many large trees and so get a lot of leaves also.

    4. Flora thought that she watered them too much and then let them dry out too much, but I am not sure if that was the reason.

Yes, sorting through all those treasures was hard for Flora, but she threw away a lot of "written" stories. The main reason for that purging was the fact that she had no idea what she was trying to say. All those stories have so many spelling errors that is hard to know what they say. Her spelling skills have so much improved that she does not remember what she was trying to say. She also got rid of many pictures she drew (they are more drawings of pretty women) and also of dog pictures she printed out. The room looks so much better, but I still have the closets there to tackle.

It was sad to take down the small table and chairs, but they are really too small now. We still have all the dolls' things out because she still plays with them.

I think I need to hire your nephews because Peter has so little time.

  3. 33 years 🙂. Ben applied for a job at the local timber merchant, he had an interview but didn’t get the position due to lack of experience. However they said his name would be kept on file as he interviewed well. Not only was it his first ever interview but his pump had failed the night before and we had to switch to insulin pens and blood sugars were all over the place! Sending love to you too and I’m really hoping and 🙏 we actually get to meet up! Any idea where you’ll be staying - north or south of the river? Xx

    1. Wow! Congratulations again! That is so great and you have been through so much together. I am sorry about Ben not getting the job. Is he looking for a different one now? Too bad the pump failed, what a nuisance. When will you get a new one. Unfortunately, we will be south of the river again. It is so hard to find a place large enough for a family of five. We wanted something with two bathrooms and that is even harder to find for such a short time.
