My husband just came back with a new load of clean laundry from the laundromat.  I'm so grateful for all the help he has offered this past week!

What did we do today?  Veronika painted a leaf picture by painting watercolor over an actual leaf on a piece of paper.  This time we used watercolors by Pelikan.  There are different sizes available in the U.S., we own a 12 color set and 6 color set.  I don't think the 6 color set is available anymore, though.  These watercolors are the standard watercolors in all German schools.  The great thing about these boxes is that you can easily remove individual colors and add other colors.  There is also a section in the box where you can mix your own colors.  The colors are similar to the Stockmar colors, except the reds: the carmine red is missing in the 12 color set, but could be bought separately.  Unfortunately, Flora later discovered the box and painted the upstairs hallway wall red!

Jonathan went with Hannibal over the Alps by listening to Livy's description of the event.  His Gallic warrior is also finished.  
 

Charlotte learned about Euclid and his classification of six types of triangles.  We made a page with random crossing lines and colored all the triangles.  We then looked at the six different types of triangles and tried to find those types in her picture.  She will draw the six types next week, label them, and define them.  Here is her triangle page. 

Miriam and I did lots of jumping, clapping, and stepping to practice the 2, 3, and 4 times tables.  We then read a story about granite and mountains to prepare for some form drawing which helped us to visualize the 4 times table.  The story was from the German book Von Pflanzen, Tieren, Steinen und Sternen. 

Mein Mann ist gerade wieder vom Waschsalon zurückgekommen.  Ich bin so dankbar, daß er hier in der letzten Woche trotz all seiner Arbeit so viel ausgeholfen hat. 

Was haben wir heute getan?  Veronika hat heute ein Herbstblatt auf ein Papierblatt gelegt und mit unserem Deckfarbkasten in Herbsttönen darüber gemalt.  Leider hat Flora später den Farbkasten entdeckt und die Flurwand oben rot angepinselt!

Jonathan ist mit Hannibal über die Alpen gezogen, indem ich ihm Livius' Bescheibung davon vorgelesen habe.  Sein gallischer Krieger ist auch fertig.

Chalotte hat sich mit Euclid und seiner Einteilung der Dreiecke beschäfltigt.  Sie hat erst eine Heftseite mit sich kreuzenden Linien gefüllt.  Auf diese Art und Weise sind dann Dreieck entstanden, welche sie angemalt hat.  Anschließend haben wir sie mit Euclids Dreieckstypen verglichen.  Nächste Woche wird sie dann die sechs Dreieckstypen zeichnen, beschriften und definieren.

Miriam und ich sind heute viel gesprungen und haben viel geklatscht, um das 2er, 3er und 4er Einmaleins zu üben.  Anschließend habe ich ihr eine Geschichte über Granit und Gebirge aus Von Pflanzen, Tieren, Steinen und Sternen vorgelesen, welche uns zum Formenzeichnen führte.  Die Form glich einem Gebirge und jeder vierter Berg war höher und wurde mit einer Zahl aus dem Vierereinmaleins gekennzeichnet.   

Thursday Fun/Spaß am Donnerstag

Jonathan has been reading in History of Art for Young People about Minoan art.  We also took a look at the Toreador Fresco from Knossos and Jonathan started to copy it into his main lesson book.  Charlotte copied all the remaining equivalent franctions into her main lesson book, and Miriam had a treat with her father: grocery shopping, which in our area is a major day trip.

Veronika really missed her play companion Miriam, but she was very happy when I suggested a watercolor painting time with Stockmar watercolors after reading Musicians of the Sun.  The book inspired Veronika to paint the sun. 

Later Veronika and Flora cooked a "stone, acorn, and nut soup" for the dolls.  This was the first time Flora spent such a long time (almost an hour) playing with Veronika!

For geography today, Charlotte worked in Maps Charts and Graphs States and Regions Level D, part of a map skill series, we're using with all the children.  She also reviewed the capitals of the American states with her flash cards.

Both Jonathan and Charlotte have started new books.  Jonathan is reading Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson.  Charlotte is reading My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George, which fits nicely with New York State geography.

  
This morning we also had the chance to watch a truck that cleaned the street's sewer system.  Veronika and Flora were fascinated by the man in the manhole. 

Charlotte quite often lets Flora share in her work.  Today Flora played recorder with Charlotte. 

Jonathan hat heute in History of Art for Young People über minoische Kunst gelesen.  Danach haben wir uns das Toreador Fresko von Knossos angesehen, welches Jonathan dann in sein Epochenheft gemalt hat.  Charlotte hat die restlichen Äquivalenzbrüche in ihr Heft geschrieben.  Miriam hat heute einen Einkaufsausflug mit ihrem Papa gemacht (ein Geburtstagsgeschenk), was in dieser Gegend immer eine Tagesreise ist.

Veronika hatte so gar keine Spielgefährtin, was sie ein wenig traurig stimmte.  Auf meinen Vorschlag hin, ein Bild mit Wassermalfarben (wir benutzen Stockmar)  zu malen, war sie ganz begeistert.  Wir haben erst Musicians Of The Sun gelesen und dann beschlossen, eine Sonne zu malen.  Später haben Veronika und Flora zusammen eine "Stein-, Eichel- und Nußsuppe" für die Puppen gekocht.  Das war das erste Mal, daß Flora so lange mit Veronika gespielt hat: fast eine Stunde!

Für Erdkunde hat Charlotte heute in Maps, Charts, and Graphs D gearbeitet, eine Serie, die wir für alle Kinder benutzen.  Sie hat auch die Hauptstädte der verschiedenen amerikanischen Staaten mit ihren Lernkarten wiederholt. 

Sowohl Jonathan als auch Charlotte haben beide neue Bücher angefangen.  Jonathan liest jetzt Kidnapped (Entführt. Die Abenteuer des David Balfour)  von Robert Louis Stevenson und Charlotte My Side of the Mountain von Jean Craighead George, welches gut zur Erdkunde von New York State paßt. 

Heute morgen hatten die Kinder auch die Gelegenheit, Kanalarbeiter direkt vor unserem Haus zu beobachten.  Veronika und Flora fanden es ganz aufregend, als ein Mann in einem "Loch" in der Straße verschwand. 

Charlotte läßt Flora häufig mitarbeiten.  Heute haben die beiden zusammen Flöte geübt. 

 

Colored Pencils and Dance/Buntstifte und Tanz

Daddy made pancakes for breakfast. Yummy!

We decided to clean our laundry room/basement (unfinished). It was a major undertaking and very cold because there is no heat down there. We made good progress, found an interesting looking spider, and can now walk to the washing machine without falling over too many snow boots!

We also decided to sharpen all our colored pencils. That took almost an hour! We really like the ones from Lyra the best and have a lot of them. Here are Miriam's sharpened pencils, which are a different brand from Germany.

Jonathan started a new book by Madeleine L'Engle for art history. It's called The Glorious Impossible [Illustrated with Frescoes from the Scrovegni Chapel by Giotto]. Beautiful pictures. While Charlotte and I were making dinner, Daddy and his younger daughters danced with Irish folk music. Jonathan made a short video of it.

And then there are the Tamburitzans visiting town tonight.

Zum Frühstück hat Papa Pfannkuchen gemacht.  Lecker! Wir haben uns heute entschlossen, unsere Waschküche/unseren Keller zu putzen. Dieser Raum ist unbeheizt und nicht wirklich ausgebaut. Wir haben aber gute Fortschritte gemacht, eine interessante Spinne gefunden und können jetzt die Waschmaschine erreichen, ohne über zu viele Winterstiefel zu fallen. Dann haben wir auch alle Buntstifte gespitzt, was fast eine Stunde gedauert hat. Wir mögen die Stifte von Lyra am liebsten und haben auch dementsprechend viele. Oben ist ein Bild von Miriams gespitzten Stiften, die allerdings "Kleiner Rabe Socke" Stifte sind. Jonathan hat heute ein neues Buch für Kunstgeschichte angefangen. Es heißt The Glorious Impossible (Illustrated with Frescoes from the Scrovegni Chapel by Giotto) und hat wunderschöne Bilder. Während Charlotte und ich Abendbrot gemacht haben, hat der Papa mit seine kleinen Töchtern zu irischer Folklore getanzt. Jonathan hat das Ganze gefilmt. Dann hat er mit Flora den Salat geschleudert.  Als Höhepunkt des Tages sind heute abend noch die Tamburitzans zu Besuch gekommen.
