St. Valentine's Day AND Ash Wednesday/St. Valentinstag und Aschermittwoch

Peter gave me a rose today.

Peter hat mir heute eine Rose geschenkt.

What a strange combination of important days!  We adhered to the fasting and abstinence rules of the Catholic church and went to church for praying the Stations of the Cross and attending the Ash Wednesday Mass.  But we also read some St. Valentine's books.  

Was für eine eigenartige Kombination von Feiertagen!  Wir haben uns an die Fastenregeln der katholischen Kirche gehalten und waren auch in der Kirche für die Kreuzwegandacht und die Aschermittwochsmesse, doch haben wir auch Bilderbücher über den Valentinstag gelesen. 

He was watching us as we were making our annual Lent calendar.

Er hat zugeguckt, wie wir unseren Fastenkalender für dieses Jahr gebastelt haben.

Fox on Ash Wednesday/Fuchs an Aschermitwoch

We were able to watch a fox from our living-room today.  He walked around, sat down, and cleaned himself very thoroughly.

Heute konnten wir einen Fuchs vom Wohnzimmerfenster aus beobachten.  Er ist rumgegangen, hat sich hin gesetzt und sich dann geputzt.

We met Peter at Victoria station and then to walk to Westminster Cathedral.  Cardinal Vincent was offering Mass today.

Wir haben Peter beim Victoria Bahnhof getroffen und sind dann zur Westminster Kathedrale gegangen.  Sie hatten eine Messe mit Kardinal Vincent.

We got there early to make sure we got a seat.

We made a new Lenten calendar this morning.

Heute morgen haben wir diesen Fastenkalender gebastelt.  

Below you can see paper strips with tasks to be completed during Lent.

Unten sieht man kleine Papierstreifen mit Fastenaufgaben, die gemacht werden müssen.  

Lunch: Carrots with Swiss chard, vegetable cakes, and one fried egg

Mittagessen: Möhren mit Mangold, Gemüsepuffer und ein Spiegelei

In church, they sprinkled the ashes onto our heads and did not make a cross on the forehead.

In der Kirche gab es kein Aschekreuz, sondern die Asche wurde auf den Kopf gestreut.

Flora hat ihre Schneeburg, die sie noch mit Jonathan gebaut hatte, vergrößert.

Well, winter is not going away in Western New York.  We got more snow overnight, and right now we are in the middle of a blizzard warning, the first one this winter.  We have had plenty of winter storms, but no blizzards.  The next few days will be interesting.  We already got a note from our electricity supplier that they are expecting outages.  So, if you don't hear from me it's because I will be buried in snow and will be without power.

Der Winter verschwindet hier nicht so schnell.  Es hat wieder in der letzten Nacht geschneit und im Moment stecken wir mitten in einer "Blizzard" Warnung.  Wir hatten schon viele Schneestürme diesen Winter, aber noch keinen "Blizzard".  Unsere Elektrizitätsfirma hat schon Stromausfall vorhergesagt und uns das mitgeteilt.  Die nächsten Tag (bis Freitag) werden sehr interessant werden.  Falls man von mir nichts hört, bin ich im Schnee begraben und habe keinen Strom.  

 This was our Lenten soup today: A red lentil soup with carrots and collard greens.

Das hier ist unsere Fastenzeitsuppe von heute: Rote Linsen mit Möhren und Blattkohl.  

We sprinkled a bit cheese on top.

Wir haben sie noch mit geriebenem Käse bestreut.  

Lenten calendars: We love the one from Catholic Icing and also the one from Pondered in My Heart.  I have decided to use A Family Journey with Jesus through Lent.  We used it many years ago and I thought it was time to use it again.  And for short thoughts/prayers/meditations, I got out Lent for Children: A Though a Day (paid link).   We don't have a fancy copy, but the printout offered by Jennifer.     

Fastenzeitkalender: Wir mögen den von Catholic Icing sehr (sie hat auch eine deutsche Ausgabe darunter) und auch den von Pondered in My Heart.  Wir benutzen auch ein Buch A Family Journey with Jesus through Lent und ein Meditationsbüchlein für Kinder, das man kaufen, aber auch kostenlos ausdrucken kann.

On our way to St. Patrick's, we had a whole tube carriage for our own, but just for one station
Auf dem Weg zu St. Patrick hatten wir einen ganzen U-Bahnwaggon für uns alleine, aber nur für eine Station.

St. Patrick's after Mass and with most people gone: The church was packed!  They had four Masses for Ash Wednesday.  Peter met us at the church because he had to teach in the morning.

St. Patrick nach der Messe, als fast alle Leute schon weg waren.  Davor war die Kirche bis auf den letzten Platz belegt.  Peter hat uns in der Kirche getroffen, weil er am Morgen unterrichten mußte. 

 After lunch, we went to the Petrie Museum, a paradise for Egyptologists.

Nach dem Mittagessen sind wir zum Petrie Museum gegangen, ein Paradies für Ägyptologen.

We went back home after the museum to have supper.  Then we left again, except Peter, who had to do some grading, to see the Tower Bridge being lifted.

Dann gab es zu Hause Abendessen.  Nach dem Abendessen sind wir zur Tower Bridge gefahren, die heute hochgezogen worden ist.  Leider mußte Peter zu Hause korrigieren.

 

 You could see the Tower very well on the other side of the Thames.

Man konnte den Tower sehr gut am anderen Ufer der Themse sehen.
