Candlemas Crêpes/Mariä Lichtmeß Crêpes

We have made many candles for Candlemas and also have had candles blessed at church.  There was no candle blessing this year, so we decided to make Candlemas crêpes like the French do.  Catholic Cuisine has a little write-up about this.

Wir haben zu Mariä Lichtmeß schon viele Kerzen gegossen und auch in der Kirche segnen lassen.  Dieses Jahr gab es aber keine Segnung der Kerzen.  Also haben wir, wie die Franzosen, Crêpes gemacht.  

Lily: The Voice of Alice von Hildebrand

Peter has downloaded podcasts by Alice von Hildebrand and we listened to one in the car today.  They are published by the people running the Hildebrand Project (we attended their conference in the summer).  Many years ago, I was at a Catholic homeschool conference where she spoke.  She reminded me a lot of my grandmother Lily.   

Peter hat Podcasts von Alice von Hildebrand auf sein Handy geladen und wir haben heute einen davon im Auto gehört.  Sie werden von den Leuten, die das Hildebrand Projekt leiten (wir waren im Sommer bei ihrer Konferenz), veröffentlicht.  Ich habe vor Jahren bei einer katholischen Homeschool Konferenz Alice von Hildebrand bei einem Vortrag gehört.  Sie hat mich sehr an meine Oma Lily erinnert.

Candlemas/Mariä Lichtmeß

Today, on Candlemas, we lit our Christmas tree for the very last time. 

Heute, an Mariä Lichtmeß, haben wir unseren Weihnachtsbaum zum letzten Mal angezündet.  

Before we could do that, we had a very hard drive back from ballet: Why does it always have to snow so much when I have to drive?  On Thursday, when Peter drives, the weather always seems to be better.  

Bevor wir das aber tun konnten, hatten wir eine schwierige Nachhausefahrt nach dem Ballett: Warum muß es immer schneien, wenn ich fahre?  Donnerstags, wenn Peter fährt, ist das Wetter immer besser.

Candlemas/Mariä Lichtmeß

Flora made this candle and we had it blessed during our Candlemas celebration in church today.

Flora hat diese Kerze gemacht, und wir haben sie während Mariä Lichtmeß in der Kirche heute segnen lassen.  

 Although Phil, the groundhog, predicted an early spring today, we got more snow.

Auch wenn Phil, das Murmeltier, heute einen frühen Frühlingsanfang vorhergesagt hat, schneit es hier bei uns immer mehr.

Candlemas/Mariä Lichtmeß

I love to look at stars

For Candlemas we have made two candles today, one in shape of a dove (you can read more about it here), and a small one for our house altar. There was no Candlemas Mass today, but we will ask Father D. to bless the candles in church tomorrow.

Für Mariä Lichtmeß haben wir heute zwei Kerzen gemacht, eine wieder in der Form einer Taube (man kann hier mehr dazu erfahren), die andere ist eine kleine für unseren Hausaltar. Es gab heute keine Mariä Lichtmeß Messe, aber wir werden Pfarrer D. morgen bitten, die Kerzen in der Kirche zu segnen.

Adding the wick and stabilizing it with two matches/Hinzufügen des Dochtes; die Streichhölzer halten den Docht aufrecht.

Placing a cookie cutter dove on a wooden board, covered with tin foil/Ein Taubenkeksausstecher wird auf ein Brettchen gelegt, welches ich vorher mit Alufolie abgedeckt habe.

The candles are still drying, I will post pictures of the finished ones tomorrow.  Die Kerzen trocknen noch.  Ich zeige hier morgen davon Fotos.  

Candlemas/Mariä Lichtmeß

Although one day late, I thought I would still share our Candlemas candles.  We rolled simple beeswax candles and the children decorated them.  Jonathan and Charlotte took all the candles with them to Mass at our local nursing home and Father blessed them.  Last year we made these candles and the year before this one.

Auch einen Tag später wollte ich noch unsere Kerzen für Mariä Lichtmeß zeigen.  Wir haben einfache Rollkerzen aus Bienenwachs gemacht und dann verziert.  Jonathan und Charlotte haben die Kerzen dann zur Messe mit ins Altersheim genommen und dort vom Pfarrer segnen lassen.  

Groundhog Day and Candlemas/Groundhog Day und Mariä Lichtmeß

Today is Groundhog Day.  We always sing and act out the song "The Groundhog" from the lovely CD "Sing a Song of Seasons" on this day.  But of course we also celebrate "The Presentation in the Temple" and Candlemas today.  So we took our candles to have them blessed by Father.  We did get a lot of snow, but not the storm they predicted.

Heute ist Groundhog Day.  Wir singen immer ein "groundhog" Lied an diesem Tag.  Es stammt von dieser CD.  Natürlich ist heute auch die Darstellung im Tempel, also Mariä Lichtmeß.  Dafür haben wir dieses Jahr zwei Kerzen verziert, die der Pfarrer dann gesegnet hat.  Unsere Kirche verteilt auch immer kostenlos schlichte gesegnete Kerzen an diesem Tag.  Es hat heute viel geschneit, aber es war kein Schneesturm.
