Geography in First Grade/Erkunde in der ersten Klasse

Geography is a mandatory subject here in New York State, not just in the higher grades, but also in the lower ones. How do we teach geography to little ones? I start with fairy tales from around the world. We do use the Grimm's fairy tales to teach the letters, but I like to use this little Stories from Around the World fairy tale book from Usborne to teach something about the fairy tales from other countries. The book includes a world map in the front, showing the reader where the fairy tales come from. It not only has beautiful stories, but also beautiful pictures.

We don't stop here, but also teach beginning geographic vocabulary by using the first book of the series Maps, Charts, and Graphs, called Places Around Us. I also use the old book Highroads of Geography I: This lovely little book describes a father's journey around the world through letters he sends home. He mainly talks about food he eats, what children do in foreign lands, what people wear, etc. All very simple. You can find the book for free online. I printed mine out and have it in a three-ring-binder. "That Resource Site" has created Montessori cards that go with the book and also a template for making mini booklets about each country the father visits. You can find them here. I printed out the cards and laminated them. We started working on the first booklet about France. Miriam joined Veronika in creating those booklets. In addition to reading "father's letters" we also read This Is Paris.

High Roads of Geography

This is Paris

In case you wondered what we did today:
Falls jemand wissen will, was wir heute gemacht haben:

We went to early Mass, then Jonathan, Charlotte, and Miriam stayed for Adoration, while I took the two little ones to the library. The computer system was not working, so every book we wanted to check out had to be written down by hand, just like in the olden days. Afterwards we picked up the three bigger children and went to see a ceramic exhibition by Jason Green: interesting patterns and beautiful colors. Back home Jonathan worked on literature and logic, Miriam and Charlotte on science, history, and geography, I read a few books on Washington and a few about the Downy Woodpecker to Veronika and Flora. Tuesday is our "Work on your own morning", no main lessons, just some book work so I can get some grading done. In the afternoon, Jonathan and Charlotte had a musical rehearsal, Miriam ballet, Veronika and Flora dressed up as ballerinas, Jonathan and Charlotte came back to do their French lesson, then there was supper, Jonathan and Charlotte left for ballet, and Peter, Veronika, and Miriam for church to pray "The Stations of the Cross."  I read Good night, Little Hare to Flora and tucked her in.

I thought I would close with a first sign of spring: Snowdrops peeking through the snow! We were amazed, I talked to three ladies I know pretty well today and they all complained about the cold and grey and wintry days. I wish I could have shown them our snowdrops!
