Veronika has also started the Western Philosophy Course from Hillsdale.  We are supplementing the course with Living Biographies of Great Philosophers (paid link).

And Flora is continuing her history studies with me.  We are learning about the Renaissance, but had to finish a main lesson entry about Thomas Aquinas.  Here is her picture of him.

Grading My Last Students/Korrekturen meiner letzten Studenten

Charlotte has been trying out new recipes!

Charlotte probiert im Moment gern neue Rezepte aus.  

I am spending my evenings with grading and grading and grading.  My two "Incomplete" students are finally handing in their missing assignments.  There is a lot to grade!  I will not have much time to write here until I am finished with them.  Their grades are due next week.  The grading also involves a lot of changing of the Moodle settings and that adds to all the work.

Ich verbringe meine Zeit abends mit meinen beiden Studenten, die noch ihre Sachen abgeben müssen.  Bis nächsten Montag müssen die Noten für sie abgegeben werden.  Ich habe also kaum Zeit, hier etwas zu schreiben, weil ich erst alles korrigieren muß.  Ich muß es nicht nur korrigieren, sondern auch mit Moodle "spielen", damit die Studenten dort ihre Sachen hochladen können.

Regular Tuesday/Normaler Dienstag

We are working diligently to complete all the things that still need to be completed.  Miriam is busy with her online political science class and we are also still doing chemistry together.  Of course she works on most of her other subjects on her own, except for German literature: We just started reading Parzival together.  We are reading Karl Pannier's translation form the Middle High German into modern German. 

Wir arbeiten hier alle weiterhin fleißig an unserem Schulstoff.  Miriam macht ja Peters Seminar in Politikwissenschaft und wir machen auch immer noch Chemie zusammen.  Die meisten Fächer macht sie natürlich alleine.  Nur deutsche Literatur lesen wir gerne zusammen.  Wir haben gerade mit Parzival in der Übersetzung von Karl Pannier angefangen.  

Veronika and I are doing a main lesson block on the Renaissance together.  We are using Live Education and also The World Awakes.  Today we watched a short video on Florence.  And for German literature, we started "Wilhelm Tell" by Schiller. 

Veronika und ich machen eine Epoche über die Renaissance.  Wir benutzen verschiedene Bücher dafür (auf Englisch).  Heute haben wir auch dieses Video angeschaut.  Für deutsche Literatur lesen wir "Wilhelm Tell" von Schiller.  

 

Flora is doing a main lesson block on animals and one on New York State history with me.  We are doing them parallel.  Right now, we are learning about Fort Orange/Beavertown, which became Albany.  For German, we are reading Petronella Apfelmus.  We found this book in London in the European Bookshop and we are happy with the book.  Jonathan helped Flora with her math.  It is quite convenient to have a big brother around.    

Mit Flora mache ich zwei Hauptepochen parallel: Eine über Tiere und eine über die Geschichte von New York.  Im Moment lernen wir etwas über Fort Orange und Beverwyck (Biberstadt), aus denen später unsere Hauptstadt Albany entstanden ist.  Für Deutsch lesen wir Petronella Apfelmus.  Wir haben das Buch im European Bookshop in London gefunden und es gefällt uns sehr gut.  Jonathan hat Flora mit Mathe geholfen.  Ein großer Bruder ist schon was Tolles.   


Today, all children except Flora had either ballet or Pilates.  Flora had her class yesterday.  While the others were exercising, the two of us went for a walk.  It was beautiful outside.  We walked to campus and returned a book to the library there.  It is called Henner's Lydia and has beautiful pictures. 

Heute hatten alle Kinder außer Flora entweder Ballett oder Pilates.  Flora hatte gestern Ballett.  Während die anderen sich bewegt haben, sind wir beide spazieren gegangen.  Es war so ein schöner Tag.  Wir haben ein Buch in die Bibliothek zurückgebracht.  Die Geschichte in diesem Buch spielt unter den Amischen in Pennsylvania und hat sehr schöne Bilder.

And after dinner, Jonathan and Charlotte left to practice her driving and then there was some basketball.  Und nach dem Abendessen hat Jonathan mit Charlotte erst Autofahren geübt und dann gab es Basketball.

Planting Spring Flowers/Frühlingblumen Pflanzen

 

On our way to the library this afternoon today, we passed one of the greengrocers.  He was selling very pretty tiny pansies and Miriam talked me into buying them for our "backyard."  She and Veronika planted them in the late afternoon.

Auf unserem Weg zur Bücherei heute nachmittag, sind wir u.a. bei einem Obst- und Gemüsehändler vorbeigekommen.  Er verkaufte auch kleine Stiefmütterchen, und Miriam hat mich überredet, welche für unseren "Garten" zu kaufen.  Am späten Nachmittag haben sie und Veronika sie dann gepflanzt.  

This morning, Miriam and I finished up our Renaissance readings with a reading on Paracelsus.  We are doing two main lessons at the same time: History and European Geography.  In European Geography, we have been studying the major mountain ranges and rivers so far.  We found a wonderful video on the Elbe River.  The video is in German.  After reading about each river or mountain rage, Miriam draws  them into a map of Europe.  Here are few pages from her Renaissance studies.  She wrote an introduction to the Renaissance and is right now working on an essay on Leonardo da Vinci.

Heute morgen haben Miriam und ich unseren Lesestoff zur Renaissance mit etwas über Paracelsus abgeschlossen.  Wir machen im Moment zwei Hauptepochen gleichzeitg: Geschichte und europäische Geographie.  In Geographie haben wir uns mit den großen Gebirgszügen und Flüssen beschäftigt.  Wir haben ein schönes Video über die Elbe gefunden.  Miriam trägt die Flüsse und Gebirge in eine Karte ein, nachdem wir etwas über sie gelesen haben.  Hier sind aber einige Seiten über die Renaissance aus ihrem Heft.  Im Moment arbeitet sie an einem Aufsatz über Leonardo da Vinci.    

 

Veronika is doing botany and also Ancient History at the same time.  We have reached Mesopotamia now and have started with the Gilgamesh epic.

Flora is making progress with her English reading skills.  After working through the lower levels of the CHC phonics program (which I used with all the other girls very successfully), we realized, we needed more practice than that program provided.  Right now we are working with I Can Read (Book A) and it is doing wonders.  We have also discovered Julia Donaldson's Songbook Phonic Readers.  The way they are set up is perfect for Flora and she has read six of stage 2 from them.  I had hoped to find more at the library, but they only had one from stage 3.  They are not pretty, unfortunately, but the stories are kind of cute.  Here you can see her main lesson book with a few new pages of letter combinations.    

Flora macht gute Fortschritte im englischen Lesen, nachdem wir endlich ein Phonetikprogramm gefunden haben, das für sie funktioniert.  Ihre neusten phonetischen Lernschritte hält sie im Heft so fest.  

 

Jonathan and I are reading Silas Marner.  I am almost done, he is not.  He is also quite busy with chemistry and dancing.  

Jonathan und ich lesen beide Silas Marner.  Ich bin fast fertig, er noch nicht.  Er hat auch viel für Chemie und Ballett zu tun.    

Charlotte and I are almost done with "Nicholas Nickleby" after taking a long break.  We will go and visit the Charles Dickens Museum soon.

Charlotte und ich haben fast "Nicholas Nickleby" zu Ende gelesen, nachdem wir damit eine lange Pause gemacht haben.  Wir wollen uns bald das Charles Dickens Museum anschauen.  

And those two also seem to be doing their P.E. lessons downstairs at home.

Und die beiden scheinen auch ihren Sportunterricht in der unteren Etage zu machen.  

And now some pictures of my aunt, uncle, and cousin (with daughter), who visited a few weeks ago.  It was hard to get a picture because the little girl would not want to sit still when we thought we should take a picture.  But who can blame her :).  

Und jetzt noch ein paar Fotos von dem Besuch meiner Tante, meines Onkels und meiner Kusine mit Tochter vor einigen Wochen.  Es war nicht so einfach, ein Foto von allen zu bekommen, weil das kleine Mädchen nicht still sitzen wollte, als wir fotografieren wollten, aber das ist ja auch zu verstehen :).

And tonight, Peter, Flora, Veronika, Miriam, and I participated in the Stations of the Cross in the local church again.  Peter and I were both readers and the girls were cross bearers.  Jonathan and Charlotte were at their dance class, I believe in Hampstead.  

Und heute abend waren Peter, Veronika, Flora, Miriam und ich bei der Kreuzwegandacht in der Kirche hier in der Nähe.  Die Mädchen haben das Kreuz getragen und Peter und ich haben einige Stationstexte vorgelesen.   Jonathan und Charlotte hatten Ballett, ich glaube in Hampstead.
