How to measure a tree like Thales did.  Measure 10 meters from the tree.

So hat Thales die Höhe eines Baumes gemessen.  Erst mißt man eine Entfernung von 10 Metern vom Baumstamm ab.

Then you form a triangle aligning the second measuring stick with the top of the tree.  What follows next, can be found in this book.  The result: The tree measures about 12 meters.

Dann formt man mit einem zweiten Maßstab ein Dreieck, wobei man den höchsten Punkt des Baumes anpeilt.  Die weiteren Schritte findet man in einem Buch, das wir gerade benutzen.  Das Ergebnis: Ca. 12 Meter ist der Baum hoch.

Geometry/Geometrie

Our new main lesson is geometry.

This is our read-aloud book.  I bought it in London :).

Dieses Buch lese ich vor.  Ich habe es in London gekauft :).  

And we are working through the old version of the RightStart Math geometry program.  Already Jonathan completed this program and loved it.  You cannot buy the lessons of the first edition anymore, but the worksheets are still available.

Wir machen ein Geometrieprogramm, das ich schon mit Jonathan gemacht habe.  Er hat es damals sehr gemocht.

Of course, Flora is also doing a year-long program in geometry.  We had planned on using Teaching Textbooks Geometry, but it was not a good fit for her.  She had done well with their pre-algebra and algebra 1, but the geometry course is very different.  We now switched to Denison Geometry, and it is working out beautifully.

Natürlich macht Flora auch ein ganzjähriges Geometrieprogramm.  In der 10. Klasse lernt man in den USA höhere Geometrie.

Charlotte saw an bald eagle in Denver.  He was eating fish.

On Saturday, we went to Camley Street Natural Park, a small city park we have been to many, many times, to count birds.

Am Samstag haben wir im Camley Street Park, einem Park, wo wir schon sehr oft waren, Vögel gezählt.

Broken Camera/Kaputter Fotoapparat

While doing the Big Garden Bird Watch, my camera broke.  I guess I have to either stop blogging completely or to do so without pictures for now.  I do have a few pictures of birds we found today because my memory card is still intact.

Während wir an einem Vogelzählwochenende teilgenommen haben, ist mein Fotoapparat kaputt gegangen.  Das bedeutet wohl eine Blogpause oder Einträge ohne Fotos.  Ich habe noch einige Fotos von den Vögeln, die wir heute gesehen haben, weil meine Speicherkarte keinen Schaden gelitten hat.

Leo was very happy to receive his PetSmart order today.  We live far away from a decent pet store, so we do have auto shipments with PetSmart.

Leo hat sich sehr gefreut, daß eine neue Bestellung mit Katzenstreu und -futter für ihn heute angekommen ist.  Wir leben weit weg von der nächsten guten Tierhandlung und daher wird Katzenfutter regelmäßig geschickt.

Snake and Travels Part 2/Schlange und Reisebericht Teil 2

This snake was in our front yard.  It was shedding its skin and we watched in awe.

Diese Natter war in unserem Garten und hat sich gehäutet.  Wir haben mit Faszination zugeschaut.

Ready for our next installment of travel reports?  (Find part 1 here.)  I will share them in a minute, but first here is a short summary of the day: Peter had a faculty meeting all morning and Jonathan drove to East Aurora for an eye doctor appointment.  He was so kind to take my wristwatch along because it needed a new watchband.  There is a wonderful jeweler up there, who also sells and repairs watches.  Miriam worked in the bookstore and then went along with Jonathan because she wanted to go to T.J. Maxx.  Veronika worked for "Charlotte's" family and Flora was at the academy for her drama class.  She said it was a good class.  I worked on a syllabus for my intermediate students, did laundry, cooked, and started thinking about the things Jonathan will have to pack tomorrow.  Outside, we saw a snake shedding its skin, but you already saw the pictures above.

Hier kommt nun der zweite Teil unserer Reise (Teil 1 ist hier).  Aber bevor ich davon berichte, gibt es noch eine kurze Zusammenfassung des heutigen Tages.  Peter hatte ein Fakultätstreffen am Morgen und Jonathan ist nach East Aurora zum Augenarzt gefahren.  Er hat auch meine Armbanduhr mitgenommen, die ein neues Armband braucht.  Es gibt dort einen Juwelier, der auch Uhren repariert und sehr gut ist.  Miriam hat im Buchladen gearbeitet, aber ist dann später mit Jonathan gefahren, um nach Kleidern zu suchen, während er beim Augenarzt war.  Veronika hat für "Charlottes" Familie gearbeitet und Flora hatte ihre erste Theaterklasse bei der Akademie.  Sie fand die Klasse sehr gut.  Ich habe an einem Lehrplan für einen Deutschkurs gearbeitet, Wäsche gewaschen, gekocht und darüber nachgedacht, was Jonathan alles morgen packen muß.  Draußen haben wir eine Schlange gesehen, die sich gehäutet hat, aber die Fotos haben meine Leser bestimmt schon oben gesehen.

Then it was time to keep going to find Peter's sister and her family in a park.

Dann mußten wir weiterfahren, um uns mit Peters Schwester und ihrer Familie in einem Park zu treffen.

The adults went for a walk.

Die Erwachsenen sind spazieren gegangen.

After a pleasant visit, we drove into Indiana and crossed over into a new time zone.

Nach einem schönen Besuch sind wir nach Indiana gefahren und nach einer Weile fing eine neue Zeitzone an.

When we left the toll road, we saw several cranes by the side of the road.

Als wir schließlich von der Autobahn abgebogen sind, haben wir mehrere Kraniche am Straßenrand gesehen.

We arrived in time for supper at Peter's parents' house.

Wir sind rechtzeitig zum Abendbrot bei Peters Eltern angekommen.
