Nature Table/Jahreszeitentisch

It is too late to write much, that is why I am just posting three pictures.

Es ist schon zu spät, um hier viel zu schreiben.  Daher habe ich nur drei Fotos.

I baked peanut butter cookies.

Ich habe Erdnußbutterkekse gebacken.

There was violin, and ballet, and we hung up our laundry outside.  The overnight frost did kill quite a few blossoms, but the apple orchards are especially hard hit: They are trying to protect their blossoms by using propane heaters.

Wir hatten heute Geige, Ballett und haben Wäsche draußen aufgehängt.  Der Frost letzte Nacht hat viele Blüten zerstört, aber besonders haben die Obstgärten damit zu kämpfen.  Es gibt hier viele kommerzielle Apfelbäume, die im Moment die ganze Nacht mit Propangas gewärmt werden müssen.

Our nature/prayer table looks all wintery.

Unser Jahreszeiten-/Gebetstisch sieht sehr winterlich aus.

Flora pinned and cut her fabric today.

Flora hat heute ihr Muster auf den Stoff geheftet und dann die Stücke ausgeschnitten.

In the evening, we did an experiment to show the presence of the enzyme catalase in pieces of potato and chicken liver (frozen, cooked, room temperature).

Am Abend haben wir dann ein Biologieexperiment gemacht, bei dem wir das Vorhandensein des Enzyms Katalase in Kartoffel- und Leberstücken (gefroren, gekocht und bei Zimmertemperatur) nachgewiesen haben.

Flora changed our seasonal nature table for October.

Flora hat unseren Jahreszeitentisch für Oktober neu gestaltet.

We still have St. Michael on our dinner table.

Der heilige Michael steht noch auf unserem Eßtisch.

Peter mowed the lawn; hopefully the last time before the first snow falls.

Peter hat Rasen gemäht.  Hoffentlich muß er das vor dem ersten Schneefall nicht noch einmal machen.

Flora cleaned on bathroom and Veronika the other one.

Flora hat ein Bad geputzt und Veronika das andere.

We aired out the duvets and bedspreads.

Wir haben die Plumeaus und Tagesdecken gelüftet.

I washed all cardigans and washable handbags.

Ich habe alle Strickjacken und waschbare Handtaschen gewaschen.

Almost Normal Life Again/Fast wieder Alltag

Our nature table still looked like January when we got back.  Today, we redecorated it to make it look like spring.

Unser Jahreszeitentisch sah immer noch nach Januar aus, doch heute haben wir ihn neu dekoriert.

My picture is a bit blurry, but my dear friend Sigrid, with whom I talked on the phone for a long time while in Germany, made this candle for us.

Dieses Foto ist ein bißchen unscharf, aber meine Freundin Sigrid, mit der ich lange in Deutschland telefoniert habe, hat mir diese Kerze gemacht.

Charlotte did some baking for us.

Charlotte hat für uns gebacken.

And some Christmas presents from Angelika finally arrived after we had thought they had gotten lost.  Two postal workers came by today, and brought us a basket full of mail.  Peter had gone to the post office earlier this week, to pick up our mail and start our regular delivery again, but the person working there was not quite sure how to do that.  Our regular mailman was on vacation.

Und dann sind noch Weihnachtsgeschenke von Angelika endlich angekommen, nachdem wir schon gedacht hatten, sie seien verloren gegangen.  Zwei Mitarbeiter der Post haben uns heute einen großen Korb voll Post gebracht.  Peter war schon vor ein paar Tagen bei der Post, um unsere Post abzuholen, aber die Postbeamtiin da, eine Vertretung, wußte nicht, wo alles war.  Unser normaler Postbote ist zur Zeit in Urlaub, aber jetzt haben wir alles zurückbekommen.

Yard work: A neighbor had already mowed the lawn, but the weeds are growing fast.

Gartenarbeit: Ein Nachbar hat schon ein wenig Rasen gemäht, aber das Unkraut wächst und gedeiht.

Yesterday, we spent our time with unpacking and putting away and grading and handing in our grades (the semester is officially over now!).  Flora went over to the lady across the street and had some tea with her.  Jonathan fixed the on-off button on our vacuum-cleaner and took Miriam for a driving-lesson.  We pushed the storm windows up and the screens down to get more air into the house again.  We found lots of dead stinkbugs . . . On Monday, we will return to our regular school work and end of the year testing for Veronika.  Flora does not need to get tested this year.  I will write an evaluation for her.

Gestern haben wir weiter ausgepackt und Sachen weggeräumt.  Dazu mußten wir zu Ende korrigieren und die Noten abgeben.  Das Semester ist jetzt offiziell vorbei.  Flora hat die Nachbarin gegenüber besucht und mit ihr Tee getrunken.  Jonathan hat den Anschalteknopf vom Staubsauger repariert und hat auch mit Miriam Autofahren geübt.  Wir haben die Winterfenster nach oben geschoben und die Fliegengitter nacht unten.  Dabei haben wir viele tote Baumwanzen gefunden.  Am Montag machen wir mit dem Schuljahr und der Abschlußprüfung für Veronika weiter.  Flora muß dieses Jahr keine machen, aber ich muß ein Gutachten über sie schreiben.

King Winter/König Winter

King Winter is really ruling the land right now.  Flora helped me to redecorate our seasonal nature table.  We also took down the Christmas tree and put it on the porch, close to the bird feeder.  The birds love to sit on it and take shelter there.  

König Winter regiert im Moment das Land.  Flora hat mir geholfen, unseren Jahreszeitenstisch neu zu gestalten.  Wir haben den Weihnachtsbaum abgeschmückt und auf die Terrasse gestellt.  Die Vögel sitzen gerne darauf und fliegen von dort zum Futterhäuschen.  Er schützt auch gut gegen den Schnee.

Seasonal Nature Table/Jahreszeitentisch

The Three Wise Men are on their way back home and Mary, Joseph, and Jesus are on their way to Egypt. 

Die drei heiligen Könige machen sich auf den Heimweg und Maria, Joseph und Jesus begeben sich auf ihre Reise nach Ägypten.  

Miriam's ice lantern has beautiful greenery and berries, but they don't show in this picture.

Miriams Eislaterne hat sehr schöne grüne Zweige und Beeren, aber man kann sie leider hier gar nicht erkennen.  

Yard Work/Gartenbarbeit

So many leaves have fallen!  Peter and Flora raked leaves today while Miriam, Veronika, and I cleaned the house and did lots of laundry.  

So viele Blätter sind gefallen!  Peter und Flora haben Blätter geharkt und Miriam, Veronika und ich haben das Haus geputzt und viel Wäsche gewaschen.

October nature table: We decorated with lots of angels and the Rosary because this month is dedicated to them.

Oktober Jahreszeitentisch: Wir haben mit vielen Engeln und einem Rosenkranz dekoriert, weil Oktober der Monat der Engel und des Rosenkranzes ist.  

This is our St. Michael scale.  On the left are bad thoughts and deeds (large stone) and on the right are the "gems" each child adds for good deeds and thoughts in order to help St. Michael in his fight against the "wickedness and snares of the devil."

Hier ist unsere Michaeliwaage.   Links liegt ein großer Stein, der für böse Gedanken und Taten steht.  Rechts liegen kleine "Edelsteine", die die guten Taten und Gedanken der Kinder zeigen, mit denen sie Erzengel Michael im "Kampf gegen die Bosheiten und Nachstellungen des Teufels" geholfen haben.  

Peter also scraped a part of our house and repainted it.

Peter hat auch Hausfarbe an schadhaften Stellen abgekratzt und alles neu gestrichen.

Our nature table has new decorations, reminding us that fall is coming soon.

Unser Jahreszeitentisch sieht schon etwas herbstlich aus.  

This afternoon, we saw five turkey vultures flying above your yard: No, we don't have any corpses lying around.

Heute nachmittag sind fünf Truthahngeier über unserem Garten geflogen: Nein, wir haben keine Leichen im Garten.

And a cricket tried to move Flora's pencil.

Eine Grille hat versucht, Floras Bleistift zu bewegen. 

This is a wonderful book about animal survival by Jim Arnosky.  I am using it with Miriam right now.

Dieses wunderschöne Buch über das Überleben von Tieren lese ich im Moment mit Miriam.  Leider ist der Autor, Jim Arnosky, kaum in Europa bekannt.  Seine Bücher sind jedoch so wunderbar!  

Flora was supposed to have a well-child visit tomorrow with our pediatrician, but they called and canceled the appointment because they were without power and did not think they would have power tomorrow morning.  I feel sorry for them.  We had so many power outages this year.  

Flora hätte morgen früh zum Kinderarzt zur Vorsorgeuntersuchung gemußt, doch der Termin ist wegen Stromausfalls abgesagt worden.  Sie haben heute keinen Strom in der Praxis und denken auch nicht, daß sie morgen welchen haben.  Wir haben wirklich zu viel Stromausfälle in der letzten Zeit.
