Rain and Timmy/Regen und Timmy

The last days have been wet and rainy.  Today, we even had a thunderstorm.  

Die letzten Tage waren naß und regnerisch.  Heute hat es sogar gewittert.  

We have been doing more routine things: going to the dentist, walking to the library to pick up books, studying, reading, teaching, etc.  

Wir machen im Moment eher Alltagsdinge: Zahnarztbesuche, Büchereibesuche, um reservierte Bücher abzuholen, lernen, unterrichten usw.

Some new books we got are Step Inside Homes Through History, Happy, Healthy Minds, and The School of Life: An Emotional Education (paid links).  If you are not familiar with the children's books from "The School of Life," check them out here.  I bought the philosophy book last time we were in London and think it is one of the best philosophy books for children.  Recently, I was able to flip through the book on art and the one on architecture; both are superb.  

Wir haben drei Bücher bei der Bücherei abgeholt, von denen jedoch keine deutschen Übersetzungen vorliegen.

"Our" bird Timmy died back home, which made us very sad.  He had been so active just recently.  Here is a video of him:

P.S. Will you please say a quick prayer for my Aunt Hanne?  She just died after a battle with cancer.

P.S. Über ein Gebet für meine Tante Hanne würde ich mich freuen.  Sie ist nach einer Krebserkrankung gestorben.

Heralds of Spring/Frühlingsboten

It was another subway strike day today.  Peter taught our students on Zoom again because there was no way to reach our students with the strike going on.  We walked to the library in the afternoon and discovered lots of signs of spring.

Heute wurde wieder bei der U-Bahn gestreikt.  Peter hat daher unsere Studenten mit Zoom unterrichtet, weil er sie heute wegen des Streiks nicht treffen konnte.  Nachmittags waren wir bei der Bücherei und haben viele Frühlingsanzeichen gesehen.

We got good news from our own house in New York: Our plants are doing well, but what is even better, the pipes are not frozen anymore.  Our friends and neighbors turned the water back on and watched all the pipes.  There is no leak or other damage!  

Wir haben auch gute Nachrichten von unserem eigenen Haus in New York: Meinen Zimmerpflanzen geht es gut, aber was noch besser ist, ist die Tatsache, daß unsere Wasserrohre nicht mehr gefroren sind.  Unsere Freunde und Nachbarn haben das Wasser wieder angestellt und die Rohre genau dabei beobachtet.  Nichts tropft und es scheint auch keinen Schaden gegeben zu haben!

We have unpacked all our suitcases and started homeschooling again.  Peter is busy preparing for the arrival of the students and the other professor.  The other professor is coming on Thursday and the students on Friday.  There is a new storm coming, so we do hope they will not run into the same problems we did.  In the afternoon, we visited the local library branch and got library cards.  We have not used public transportation so far (except Peter) because we are waiting for Flora's Oyster card (travel card for public transportation) to arrive.  Her card comes in the mail because she does not have to pay full price.  

Wir haben alles ausgepackt und wieder mit dem Schulunterricht angefangen.  Peter bereitet die Ankunft der Studenten und des anderen Professors vor.  Der andere Professor kommt am Donnerstag und die Studenten am Freitag.  An der Ostküste von Amerika entwickelt sich wieder ein neuer Schneesturm.  Hoffentlich ergeht es den Studenten und dem Professor nicht so wie uns.  Das möchte man keinem wünschen.  Heute nachmittag waren wir in unserer Büchereizweigstelle, um uns Ausweise zu besorgen.  Wir sind bisher noch nicht mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln gefahren, weil wir noch auf Floras Fahrausweis warten müssen.  Er wird mit der Post geschickt, weil sie eine Ermäßigung bekommt.

I have zoomed with my German student and am trying to straighten out some Moodle problems.  Yes, I am using that again.  I will zoom with her again tomorrow.  When we did class on Monday, Timmy, our "new" pet, heard my voice and got all happy and started to twitter 😁!  (My student is taking care of him during our absence.)

Ich habe meine Studentin am Montag mit Zoom unterrichtet.  Wir haben ein paar Probleme mit Moodle, die erst einmal behoben werden müssen.  Als wir uns am Montag "gesehen" haben, hat Timmy, unser Vogel, meine Stimme gehört, und sofort laut zu zwitschern angefangen 😁 .  Meine Studentin kümmert sich im Moment um Timmy.  Morgen unterrichte ich die Studentin wieder.
