ZDF

Miriam had the great opportunity to spend a day at the German TV station ZDF.  You might wonder how we got the idea, but it is quite simple: One of my brothers and a member of the London ZDF studio went to school together in Northern Germany.  I still remember my brother's friend when he came over and played with my brother (about 30 years ago).  He offered to have Miriam for a day and let her participate in everything the studio did that day.  She even went out with them, standing in front of the Houses of Parliament, for an interview with someone about Covid in the UK.  Of course, this was a day all in German.  She really enjoyed her time there and came back home (on her own) quite happy.  Flora and I dropped her off and got a tour of the studio.  We went up to the top floor, which gives you a great view of Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, Downing Street, and Buckingham Palace.    

Miriam hatte am Montag die Gelegenheit, einen ganzen Tag beim ZDF mitzumachen.  Einer meiner Brüder und ein Mitarbeiter des ZDFs sind zusammen in die Schule gegangen.  Ich kann mich noch gut daran erinnern, wie sie zusammen gespielt haben (so vor 30 Jahren).  Er hat Miriam angeboten, einen ganzen Tag bei allem, was im Studio so anfiel, mitzumachen.  Sie war sogar bei einem Interview vor dem Parlamentsgebäude über Coronaregeln in England mit dabei.  Es hat ihr großen Spaß gemacht und sie kam abends zufrieden (alleine) wieder nach Hause.  Natürlich war das ein Tag ganz auf Deutsch!  Flora und ich haben sie hingebracht und eine Führung durch das Studio bekommen.  Von oben hat man eine gute Aussicht: Man kann die Parlamentsgebäude, Big Ben, den Buckingham Palast, Downing Street und mehr sehen.

Flora and I went to John Lewis (huge department store) after dropping Miriam off to buy some yarn and buttons.  I love the haberdashery department ("notions," for American readers) in John Lewis.  We had left Veronika at home to prepare for an important event: How to deal with handymen and other similar people when your husband is absent.  Somebody from the gas company had been scheduled to do a routine check on the furnace and the oven and she volunteered to do that for me (Peter was teaching and I thought I should take Miriam to the ZDF studio).  She handled the situation very well and the man was not even hard to understand.  He even had brought slippers to not soil the floors.  He knew his way around (apparently all these people know our house), but did not have a key (like many other similar people).  

Flora und ich waren in dem Kaufhaus John Lewis, in der Kurzwarenabteilung, um mehr Wolle und Knöpfe zu kaufen.  Ich mag diese Kurzwarenabteilung sehr.  Wir hatten Veronika zu Hause gelassen, damit sie Erfahrungen mit Handwerkern und ähnlichen Leuten während der Abwesenheit eines Ehemannes sammelt.  Jemand vom Gaswerk hatte einen Termin für Montag, um die Heizung und den Herd zu testen.  Veronika hatte sich angeboten, den Herrn ins Haus zu lassen, weil Peter unterrichten mußte und ich ja Miriam beim ZDF abliefern wollte.  Sie hat das alles sehr gut gemacht und man konnte den Herrn mühelos verstehen.  Er hatte sogar Hausschuhe dabei, um den Boden nicht zu verschmutzen.  Er kannte sich im Haus auch gut aus (anscheinend kennen sich hier viele Leute aus), aber hatte keinen Schlüssel (wie so viele andere dieser Leute).

Today, all of London had signs of St. David's Day.  St. David is the patron saint of Wales.

Heute konnte man überall in London sehen, daß St. Davids Tag war.  St. David ist der Nationalheilige von Wales.  

I took the picture above on Trafalgar Square before we visited the National Gallery to study some more paintings Miriam has been learning about.  And before going to the library, we spent some time at the department store John Lewis.

 We encountered this lion on our way to the notions (or haberdashery, as they call that section here).

Ich habe das Foto oben auf dem Trafalgar Platz gemacht, bevor wir in die Nationalgallerie gegangen sind, wo wir wieder Gemälde von Malern angesehen haben, über die Miriam im Moment etwas lernt .Und vor der Galerie waren wir im Kaufhaus John Lewis.

After our short visit, we took the bus to Westminster Cathedral (not Abbey) to attend a Mass for St. David's Day.  It was a bilingual Mass in English and Welsh and there was also a Welsh choir (well, there was more English than Welsh, but the Welsh was really neat to hear).  

Nach unserem kurzen Besuch in der Galerie sind wir mit dem Bus zur Westminster Kathedrale (nicht Abtei) gefahren, wo eine Messe für St. David stattfand.  Die Messe war auf Englisch und Walisisch und ein walisischer Chor hat auch gesungen.  Allerdings überwog die englische Sprache.

London to Bremen/Von London nach Bremen

Before we left London, we went once more to the department store John Lewis.  They have a very nice children's clothing section.  

Vor unserer Abreise aus London waren wir noch einmal im Kaufhaus John Lewis, wo es qualitativ gute Kinderkleidung gibt.  

We also visited the Benjamin Franklin House.  Benjamin Franklin lived here for about 16 years.  You can tour the house with a very interesting tour which is set up like a live play with the daughter of the landlady leading you through the house.  The house itself is empty.  

Wir waren auch im Benjamin Franklin Haus.  Benjamin Franklin hat dort ungefähr 16 Jahre lang gewohnt.  Man kann eine Führung machen, die wie ein Theaterstück ist.  Man wird von der Tochter Franklins Vermieterin durch das Haus geführt, wobei sie mit Gästen und historischen Persönlichkeiten mittels eines Bildschirms spricht.  Es wirkt alles ganz echt und die Schauspielerin, die die Tochter spielt, hat ihre Sache sehr gut gemacht.  Das Haus selbst ist jedoch ganz leer.

We also went to say good-bye to "Flora's horse" at the National Gallery.

While Jonathan, Charlotte, and Miriam visited the special exhibition about Michelangelo and Sebastiano, Veronika, Flora, and I walked through the section of the gallery that has the oldest paintings.

After we had finished at the National Gallery, we went to hear the bells of the Swiss clock.
