Ham House/Haus

Today was our last Saturday at the German Saturday School.  The children there will have a three week Easter break.  When the new term starts, we will be already packing for our trip home.

Heute war unser letzter Tag bei der deutschen Samstagsschule.  Die Kinder dort haben jetzt Osterferien und wenn ihr neues Trimester anfängt, packen wir schon unsere Koffer, um wieder nach Amerika zu fliegen.  

After classes, we visited the Ham House.  We have been here before, but it is a nice place to visit again.

Nach dem Unterricht haben wir uns Ham Haus angesehen.  Wir waren hier schon, aber man kann immer wieder hingehen.

Back in Richmond, we stopped at Whole Foods (!) to get some food for guests tomorrow.

In Richmond haben wir dann noch eingekauft, weil wir heute Gäste erwarten.

Pinke, Panke, Schmidt ist kranke

We had a lovely day in Richmond, especially because we managed to avoid all the traffic chaos that was caused by the Brexit march.  Several families from our German Saturday school took part in it, though.  That caused a drop of students in class: Veronika had only nine students there (out of 20).  My first grade had almost everybody there, though, 17 children.  I amused them today, among other things, by showing them how to play an old German fingerplay called "Pinke Panke."

Wir hatten einen schönen Tag in Richmond.  Da wir nicht in London waren, sind wir auch nicht in das Vekehrschaos reingeraten, das der Anti-Brexitmarsch verursacht hat.  Einige unserer Schulkinder waren allerdings mit ihren Eltern beim Marsch, so daß z. B. in Veronikas Klasse nur neun von 20 Kindern waren.  In meiner ersten Klasse ware jedoch fast alle da, 17 Kinder.  Ich habe ihnen unter anderem "Pinke, Panke" beigebracht.  Das fanden sie ganz toll!

Two years ago, we went to Richmond and really liked it.  On Saturday, Peter had to attend to the students (they got Oyster cards, learned about their house rules, and took a LONG walk through major London sights and along the Thames), so the girls and I took the train to Richmond.  Charlotte and I walked along the Thames and to the Ham House, while the other girls attended the German "Samstagsschule" (Saturday School).  We heard so much German that day!

Vor zwei Jahren waren wir schon einmal in Richmond und haben es dort sehr gemocht  Am Samstag mußte sich Peter um die Studenten kümmern (sie haben Fahrausweise bekommen, sind mit den Hausregeln ihrer Unterkunft vertraut gemacht worden und sind dann lange spazieren gegangen, um wichtige Sehenswürdigkeiten und die Themse zu sehen).  Die Mädchen und ich sind mit dem Zug nach Richmond gefahren.  Charlotte und ich sind an der Themse entlang geschlendert (bis zum Ham Haus) und die anderen drei haben an der deutschen Samstagsschule teilgenommen.  Wir haben ganz viel Deutsch an diesem Tag gehört!

 I think this used to be one of the gates to the Ham House, now people are living in it.

Ich glaube, daß dieses Gebäude ein Torhaus zum Ham Haus gewesen ist, aber jetzt wohnen da Leute drin.

 We were very puzzled by this sign, but later found out that it just means there is a place with a traffic light for pedestrians to cross the road.

Dieses Schild warnt vor "Nashornpelikanen".  Wir fanden es sehr eigenartig, haben aber herausgefunden, daß es nur der Name für einen Fußgängerüberweg mit Ampel ist.
