We officially started today and all in all, the day went very smoothly.  Each girl had a checklist, generated by the Simply Charlotte Mason Organizer.  We also started new main lessons: Flora is doing Botany, Veronika Revolutions, and Miriam Zoology.  Miriam also had her first in-person class on campus today.  So far, her history class had been online.  What did not go so well was the fact that the battery for Veronika's physical science experiment was too week.  We will order a stronger one and hope that it will work then.    

Wir haben heute offiziell mit dem neuen Schuljahr angefangen und alles hat ziemlich gut geklappt.  Jedes Mädchen hatte eine Liste zum Abhaken.  Unsere neuen Epochen sind Botanik für Flora, Revolutionen für Veronika und Zoologie für Miriam.  Miriam hat auch zum ersten Mal ihr Geschichtsseminar mit den anderen Studenten im Seminarraum und nicht online gehabt.  Was nicht so gut geklappt hat war eine zu schwache Batterie bei einem Experiment, das Veronika für Naturwissenschaften machen mußte.  Wir werden jetzt eine andere bestellen und hoffen, daß es dann besser klappt.

For handwriting practice, Veronika is continuing with the old German cursive script.  It is not in use anymore, but many older letters were written in that particular style.

There was a strong wind all morning and people in the neighboring village were without power.

Miriam is trying to figure out a certain stitch for a felt bird she is making.

Miriam versucht eine bestimmt Stichart für einen Filzvogel herauszufinden.

Flora is choosing wool for felted pebbles she is going to make.

Flora sucht sich Wolle für gefilzte Steine aus.

And then she is doing her cross stitch project.

Dann arbeitet sie weiter an ihrem Kreuzstichprojekt.

There were fireworks in the evening for Labor Day.

Am Abend gab es Feuerwerk zum Tag der Arbeit.  

Pizza and German Script/Pizza und alte deutsche Schrift

Flora talked me into making pizza yesterday evening after we had dropped off all the remaining children's clothes at the house of the young couple from church.  We stayed a while and the children played in the backyard.  Back home, Flora begged me to make pizza and promised she would help me a lot.

Flora hat mich gestern überredet, Pizza zum Abendbrot zu machen (ich mache immer meine eigene Pizza, keine Backmischung oder so etwas).  Nachdem wir die letzten Kinderkleider dem jungen Ehepaar aus der Kirche gebracht hatten, und die Kinder zusammen im Garten gespielt hatten, wollte sie unbedingt Pizza haben.  Sie würde mir auch ganz viel helfen!  

Today, Veronika and Miriam both wrote letters in the old German script to send to my grandfather's cousin, who just turned 95.  Jonathan and Charlotte wrote letters in this script last month and sent them to her.

Heute haben Veronika und Miriam beide Briefe in der alten deutschen Schrift an die Kusine meines Großvaters geschickt, die gerade 95 geworden ist.  Jonathan und Charlotte haben das letzten Monat auch gemacht.   

Charlotte was at the ballet studio helping out with summer camps.
Charlotte war beim Ballettstudio und hat bei den Ballettferienlagern mitgeholfen.  

Jonathan and I are well into The Robbers by Schiller.  Jonathan seems to like the "villain," Franz Moor.

Jonathan und ich kommen gut in Den Räubern von Schiller voran.  Jonathan schätzt bisher den "Bösewicht" Franz Moor.  

Old German Cursive/Alte deutsche Schreibschrift

Like their older siblings, Miriam and Veronika are now learning the old German cursive.  It is not used anymore, but you can still find many old letters written in this script.  There is a wonderful little booklet to learn it.  

Wie ihre älteren Geschwister lernen auch Miriam und Veronika die alte Sütterlinschrift.  Dieses wunderbare kleine Heft hilft ihnen dabei.      

Flora learned two more letters, but then also succumbed to the cold/flu that is going around.  Miriam is feeling better again.

Flora hat noch zwei neue Buchstaben gelernt, doch dann hat sie sich auch mit einer Erkältung/Grippe ins Bett gelegt.  Miriam geht es wieder besser.  

Jonathan and Charlotte are learning ballroom dance!  This afternoon was their first class.  They are the only young people there.

Jonathan und Charlotte lernen Gesellschaftstanz!  Heute nachmittag waren sie zum ersten Mal dort.  Sie waren mit Abstand die jüngsten Teilnehmer.  

Charlotte also had her first flute lesson for the year.

Charlotte hatte auch ihre erste Querflötenstunde des Schuljahres.  

Miriam tried to draw with charcoal today.  That was not so easy!

Miriam hat heute versucht, mit Kohle zu malen.  Das war nicht so einfach!

And I baked some sesame cookies and also made zucchini apple soup for dinner.

Und ich habe Sesamkekse gebacken und eine Zucchiniapfelsuppe zum Abendessen gekocht.  

Tomorrow we will have another meeting with our Vienna students.  Jonathan and Charlotte will not be able to go because they are already practicing for the Nutcracker.

Morgen haben wir auch noch ein Treffen mit unseren Wienstudenten.  Jonathan und Charlotte können allerdings nicht mit, weil sie schon für den Nußknacker üben müssen.
