Little Things/Kleine Dinge

Jonathan and Miriam repaired our screen door yesterday.  Before they could do that, though, we hunted all over the house for the charging cable to the drill and the staple gun.  I found the charging cable tucked away in one of our many boxes and Veronika found the staple gun; it had slipped behind the bag with fabric scraps in one of our closets.

Jonathan und Miriam haben gestern unsere Fliegengittertür repariert.  Bevor sie mit der Arbeit anfangen konnten, haben wir fieberhaft das Haus auf den Kopf gestellt, weil das Aufladegerät für den Bohrer fehlte und auch der Handtacker nicht zu finden war.  Ich habe das Aufladegerät dann in einer unserer tausend Kisten gefunden und Veronika den Handtacker im Bastelschrank.  Er war hinter den Sack mit den Stoffresten gefallen.

We have been enjoying some good books recently.  One was about John Cash Penney, the founder of the J.C. Penney stores.  Another one is The Printer's Apprentice, a historical book about New York City, and the third one is Caius geht ein Licht auf (Mystery of the Roman Ransom, paid link).

In den letzten Wochen haben wir gute Bücher gelesen.  Ein Kinderbuch über den Gründer des Kaufhauses J. C. Penney, ein anderes über einen Druckerlehrling im alten New York und dann auch Caius geht ein Licht auf.  

Today was a very hot day.  I did not work in the yard and also did not wash any windows.  but I did work on updating high school ideas in general for our homeschool.  Yesterday, I washed our front door, including the window and screen door.  Jonathan went to get a hair cut and Peter went grocery shopping, all in the next village.  Even the drugstore opened again, but not the library.  We have not been going anywhere else.

Heute war ein sehr heißer Tag.  Ich habe nicht im Garten gearbeitet und auch keine Fenster geputzt.  Gestern habe ich unsere Haustür geputzt, inklusive Glasfenster und Fliegengittertür.  Dafür habe ich weiter für das neue Schuljahr geplant.  Jonathan war beim Friseur und Peter hat Lebensmittel eingekauft, alles im Nachbardorf.  Wir machen eigentlich keine Ausflüge als ins nächste Dorf.  Dort hat jetzt sogar die Apotheke wieder auf, aber nicht die Bücherei.

Miriam painted this pretty picture for me: Charlotte had found the rose in the woods yesterday.

Miriam hat dieses schöne Bild für mich gemalt.  Charlotte hat die Wildrose gestern im Wald gefunden.  

 
And of course, there was baseball.  Und natürlich gab es wieder Baseball.

"Aggressive Knitting Needle"/"Aggressive Stricknadel"

Who would have thought that a wooden knitting needle could be a dangerous item to have around. This morning I stumbled over Veronika's knitting basket: One of her needles was sticking out and went right through my sock into my leg and was stuck there. A strange sight and quite painful. I quickly pulled it out while thinking of all those warriors that had to pull arrows from their bodies when fighting in a battle. Luckily, I only needed a band-aid!

Wer haette je gedacht, dass hoelzerne Stricknadeln ganz gefaehrlich werden koennen.  Heute morgen bin ich ueber Veronikas Strickkorb gestolpert, aus dem eine ihrer Nadeln herausteckte.  Sie piekste sich durch meinen Strumpf geradewegs ins Bein hinein und steckte dort fest.  Das sah sehr eigenartig aus und tat ziemlich weh.  Ich kam mir vor wie ein Krieger, der im Kampf einen Pfeil aus seinem Koerper herausziehen muss.  Nachdem ich den "Pfeil" gluecklich entfernt hatte, brauchte ich Gott sei Dank nur ein Pflaster.  

What else? No chance to upload pictures, but I can "talk" a bit. We were supposed to watch a weather balloon launch today, but that got canceled due to thunder storms. So we went to church and to the library. At the library I helped out with the computers and printers, a task that seems to be put before me whenever I go there. Pretty soon I will be their official computer person. While I was a the library  Peter dropped off our quarterly reports at the school and had a chat with our superintendent.

Was sonst?  Heute kann ich keine Fotos hochladen und habe auch keine deutsche Tastatur zur Verfuegung.  Wir haetten eigentlich bei der Steigung eines Wetterballons dabeisein sollen, aber das Ereignis wurde wegen Gewitters abgesagt.  Daher sind wir in die Kirche und zur Buecherei gegangen.  In der Buecherei habe ich mit den Druckern und Computern ausgeholfen, eine Aufgabe, die ich inzwischen fast immer uebernehme, wenn ich dort bin.  Bald bin ich die offizielle Computerfachfrau dort.  Waehrend ich in der Buecherei war, hat Peter unsere dritten Quartalszeugnisse bei der Schule abgeliefert und ein wenig mit dem Rektor geschwatzt, der auch Politikwissenschaft studiert hat.  

Back home Jonathan got ready to work on campus. Today he had to do research on Hieronymus Bosch and his painting "Ship of Fools."  So I sent him not to his usual learning room, but to the college library instead to practice those research skills. He did quite well. The others worked mainly on science, geography, literature, and religion. With Veronika I read the delightful picture book Crinkleroot's Guide to Knowing the Birds.  We also managed to read a few chapters from Theras and His Town (I saw that you also got the book, Dorina, how exciting!).  After lunch, Jonathan and I read more about the Reformation, especially about Martin Luther.  I have a wonderful German book with lots of pictures about him, which comes in very handy for this lesson.  We have also been reading about Francis I and Charles V and their importance during that time.  Then it was time for him to run to his art class, the others did some quiet reading, except Veronika and Flora, who played '"traveling."

Zu Hause hat Jonathan dann seine Siebensachen zusammengesucht, um beim College in seinem "Lernzimmer" zu lernen.  Ich hatte aber heute auch noch eine Sonderaufgabe fuer ihn: Er musste in der Bibliothek des Colleges etwas ueber Hieronymus Bosch und sein Gemaelde "Das Narrenschiff" herausfinden.  So konnte er gleich das "Forschen" ueben, was man ja fuer das College koennen muss und was hier sogar Pflichtfach in New York ist.  Die anderen haben vor allen Dingen sich mit Erdkunde, den Naturwissenschaften und Religion beschaeftigt.  Veronika habe ich ein wunderschoenes Buch ueber Voegel vorgelesen.  Wir haben auch weiter ueber Theras in Athen und Sparta gelesen (Buch siehe oben).  Nach dem Mittagessen hatte ich gerade noch Zeit, meine Geschichtsstudien ueber die Reformation mit Jonathan fortzusetzen.  Wir lernen etwas ueber Martin Luther, Karl V und Franz I von Frankreich.  Der hilfreiche Fotoband Martin Luther ist eine wunderbare Ergaenzung dazu.  Daraufhin war es schon wieder Zeit fuer Jonathans Kunstkurs, die anderen haben gelesen, nur Veronika und Flora haben "Verreisen" gespielt.      

Flora's favorite read-alouds right now are Bedtime for Francis and The Little Engine That Could.  She and Veronika went to play outside in the rain, while Miriam left for ballet, and Jonathan, who had just returned from art class, left with Charlotte for another long "Seussical" practice (until 10:00 p.m.).

Flora mag im Moment diese beiden englischen Bilderbuecher sehr gerne: Fraenzi geht schlafen und Die kleine blaue Lokomotive .  Sie hat heute nachmittag mit Veronika im Regen gespielt, waehrend Miriam zur Ballettstunde gegangen ist, Jonathan, kaum von seinem Kunstkurs zurueck, und Charlotte fuer eine weitere lange Probe fuer ihr Musical (wieder bis 22.00 Uhr) aufbrechen mussten.  

I guess that makes a pretty full day again, especially for a wounded warrior.  Wishing everybody a good night.
