Remaining Days of Christmas/Letzte Weihnachtsfeiertage

Our tree is still up.  We are lighting it tonight for the last time.  On Tuesday, Miriam will have to take the train back to New Hampshire to start her very last college semester.

Unser Baum steht noch.  Wir machen ihn heute abend zum letzten Mal an.  Am Dienstag fährt Miriam mit dem Zug zurück nach New Hampshire, weil ihr allerletztes Collegesemester anfängt.

Although we all had this really bad cold, we managed to complete some more Christmas activities.

Auch wenn wir alle krank waren, haben wir noch ein paar Weihnachts-aktivitäten gemacht.

Day 6: We not only started knitting foxes, but also watched the German movie "Die Weihnachtsgans Auguste."

Tag 6: Wir haben nicht nur angefangen, Füchse zu stricken, sondern auch den Film Die Weihnachtsgans Auguste geguckt.

On January 6, we celebrated Jonathan's birthday via video chat.  I had ordered him a supper, flowers, and cake from Whole Foods.  He only had to pick it up.

Am 6. Januar haben wir Jonathans Geburtstag mit einem Videotelefonat gefeiert.  Ich habe ihm Blumen, Abendbrot und einen Kuchen bei einem Laden in Washington bestellt, die er nur abholen mußte. 

This completes my catch-up here.  Our semester has started, and we have taught for a week.  Flora and I did some homeschooling, but not all subjects yet.  Ballet and art has started up again.  Violin lessons will resume this coming week.  It is quite cold and snowing again.

Das waren die letzten Wochen/Monate.  Unser Semester hat schon wieder angefangen.  Ich habe schon eine Woche wieder Deutsch unterrichtet.  Flora und ich haben auch wieder zusammen gelernt, aber noch nicht alle Fächer gemacht.  Ballett und Kunst haben wieder angefangen.  Geige fängt in der kommenden Woche wieder an.  Es ist sehr kalt und schneit wieder.

We are reading many Christmas pictures books, most of them are from the library.  If you need some ideas what picture books to read, check out my list here which I have compiled over several years.  A book with wonderful Christmas short stories is Children of Christmas (paid link) by Cynthia Rylant.  We are reading them each night.

Wir lesen viele Weihnachtsbilderbücher.  Die meisten sind auf Englisch und kommen aus der Bücherei.  Einige gibt es auch auf Deutsch.  Hier ist meine Liste, die ich über mehrere Jahre zusammengestellt habe.  Neulich haben wir ein sehr lustiges Buch gelesen: Das schönste Geschenk.

Charlotte was supposed to come home yesterday, but her flight was delayed again.  She was supposed to fly to Buffalo this time and did arrive there after 9:00 p.m.  Peter tried to pick her up, but had to turn around after only ten minutes: The roads were so bad that he could not see a thing.  So Charlotte had to spend a night in a hotel.  He is trying again today to reach Buffalo and we do hope he will make it there and back.  Our area does have a "state of emergency" right now.

Charlotte sollte gestern nach Hause kommen, aber ihr Flug nach New York war wieder aufgeschoben worden.  Um 21.00 Uhr ist sie dann aber doch in Buffalo gelandet.  Peter hat versucht, ihn abzuholen, doch schon nach zehn Minuten Fahrzeit mußte er umkehren, weil die Straßen zu schlecht waren.  Charlotte mußte also eine Nacht im Hotel übernachten.  Er ist gerade wieder nach Buffalo aufgebrochen und versucht, sie heute früh abzuholen.  Mal sehen, ob das funktioniert.  In unserer Gegend ist der Notstand wegen des Wetters ausgerufen worden.

Charlotte was supposed to come today.  She took a night flight from Denver to Washington and wanted to continue on to Rochester.  Peter drove up to Rochester to get her.  However, her connecting flight got canceled due to high winds and a snowstorm.  So she is stuck in D.C.  Luckily, Jonathan managed to find somebody from the management of his apartment complex to let her into his apartment so she can spend the night there.  Hopefully, her new flight will actually get here.  The snowstorm is still raging, and there a quite a few power outages in the area.  Today, Charlotte visited the National Portrait Gallery:

Charlotte sollte heute nach Hause kommen.  Sie ist mit einem Nachtflug von Denver nach Washington geflogen und sollte dann weiter nach Rochester fliegen.  Peter ist nach Rochester gefahren, um sie abzuholen, doch dann ist ihr Flug wegen Wind und Schneesturm abgesagt worden.  Jetzt sitzt sie also in Washington.  Jonathan hat es geschafft, daß jemand von der Hausverwaltung ihr seine Wohnung aufschließt, so daß sie da übernachten kann.  Hoffentlich kann sie morgen wirklich fliegen.  Hier wütet immer noch der Schneesturm und es gibt viel Stromausfall.  Charlotte war dann heute in der National Portrait Gallery:

Most of the day was "grading day" for Peter and me (after he had returned from Rochester without Charlotte).  Our grades are due tonight at 11:00 p.m.  Now the fall semester is truly finished.

Fast den ganzen Tag haben Peter (nachdem er ohne Charlotte aus Rochester zurückgekommen war) und ich uns mit den Noten unserer Studenten beschäftigt, die heute fällig sind.  Jetzt ist das Semester wirklich zu Ende.
