Lent is a wonderful time to concentrate on the life of Jesus. To that end we are reading
A Family Journey with Jesus Through Lent. This book writes about Jesus and his life through the eyes of several children and also through Jesus' own eyes Himself. It is perfect for 8-12 year-olds, but my older ones still enjoy it too. Another book we are reading is
The Bronze Bow. Jonathan and I have already read it several years ago and really like it, but now I am using it as a read-aloud for the older three. It is also set during Jesus' times. We also have a wonderful non-fiction book about the time of Jesus, but it is in storage right now and I cannot get to it until after the floors are done. I don't remember the title, so I will add it later here.

In addition I am planning on reading
The Story of a Soul with Jonathan and Charlotte. One chapter per week and somewhat more during Holy Week should take us through the book.
The three big tasks for Lent are praying, fasting, and almsgiving. To help with that I still really like
Lent for Children that Jennifer Gregory Miller made available for print out. I have several of these and the children like to use the every year.
CRS Ricebowl has a wonderful way to save money by eating simple meals and donate the saved money to poor countries. They offer a
Lenten calendar to help with this task and you can also find worksheets, prayers, etc., on their site. Also, our diocese has a special Lenten collection and the children have special Lenten offering box. To make these three components visible and tangible for the children I made a Lenten calendar that invites them to draw crosses for each daily sacrifice. This was inspired by many ideas online. Here is
Flora's sample. I either let them draw a task for each day from several slips of paper (like "Pray for all hungry people," "Fast from saying unkind words," "Give a hug to your sister," or "Be an invisible helper to the person of your choice today.") or I let them come up with their own ideas (today Jonathan, Charlotte, and Miriam decided to pray the Rosary, Charlotte gave me a massage, and Jonathan helped a lot in the kitchen). During Holy Week we will get out our salt dough crown of thorns and will strive to remove all the thorns by Easter.

I myself want to challenge myself to "40 Days of Mending." I never find time to mend and have piles and piles. So if you don't find a blog entry I might be mending (or preparing my German class). We will see how this goes, I do hope to mend one piece per day, but if I realize that I won't be able to do it, I will just try to mend 40 days, each day just a little bit.
