For Memorial Day we joined our local homeschool group on a field trip with the Arcade & Attica Railroad.  We had reserved one car for our group and traveled to Curriers Station with an old steam engine!  When we told Flora we were going to ride a train, her first question was where we were going.  We told her not really anywhere, but we would enjoy riding an older train.  She thought this was hilarious, not going anywhere, and could not stop laughing.  Her European travels have taught her that you ride a train to get to a certain place and not just for the experience.  It took her quite a while to really grasp this different concept :).  

Am Montag, Memorial Day, sind wir mit unserer Homeschoolinggruppe mit der alten Arace & Attica Eisenbahn gefahren.  Wir hatten einen ganzen Wagon für unsere Gruppe reserviert, und der Zug wurde von einer alten Dampflok gezogen.  Wir sind zum Curriers Bahnhof und wieder zurück gefahren.  Als wir Flora erzählten, wir würden mit dem Zug fahren, war ihre erste Frage nach dem Zielort.  Wir teilten ihr dann mit, daß es kein wirkliches Ziel gäbe, sondern die Fahrt das Interessante wäre.  Das fand sie sehr komisch und sie mußte sehr lachen.  In Europa fährt man ja mit dem Zug irgendwohin und nicht nur, weil man gerade Zug fahren will.  Es hat eine Weile gedauert, bis sie dieses neue Konzept einordnen konnte.

Our field trip on Wednesday brought us to Lockport, NY, home of the famous "Flight of Five," five locks in a row on the Erie Canal.  Jonathan drove us almost all the way to Lockport.

Unser Ausflug am Mittwoch hat uns nach Lockport geführt.  Dorf befindet sich eine fünfstufige Schleuse, eine einmalige Konstruktion des Eriekanals.  Jonathan hat uns fast die ganze Strecke dahin gefahren.

 Our guide points out that those dents were made to place dynamite into and then blast the rock away, a task given to children that were about 10 years old.
