It is supposed to snow on Thursday and so we spent most of our afternoon, raking leaves. We got them all off the ground!
Bevor der nächste Schnee am Donnerstag kommt, haben wir es doch tatsächlich geschafft, alle Blätter vom Boden zu kriegen.

Today was our last day teaching before Thanksgiving. We will be taking a short break until Monday. Jonathan and Charlotte will also be home. Jonathan arrived today and Peter will pick up Charlotte tomorrow. They have to go back on Sunday.
Heute war unser letzter Unterrichtstag vor dem amerikanischen Erntedankfest am Donnerstag. Wir machen bis Montag eine Erntedankfestpause. Jonathan und Charlotte haben auch Ferien. Jonathan ist schon heute gekommen und Peter holt Charlotte morgen ab. Sie müssen dann Sonntag wieder zurück.
Warum findet der amerikanische Erntedanktag eigentlich so viel später statt als das Erntedankfest hier? Habt Ihr es gut, ihr könnt die Blätter einfach wegschaffen. Hier muss man sie entsorgen und dafür zahlen oder man hat einen Komposthaufen. :-)
ReplyDeleteDas ist einfach willkürlich so festgelegt worden. Es ist durch die verschiedenen Klimazonen hier sehr schwierig, eine Erntezeit festzulegen. Im Norden ist die Ernte viel früher fertig als im Süden. Abraham Lincoln hat das Fest einfach auf den letzten Donnerstag im November gelegt. Ja, hier kippen alle Leute ihre Gartenabfälle ins Grüne, aber es gibt hier auch mehr "Grünes" als kultiviertes Land. In den Städten sieht das auch anders aus. Kompost kann man hier aber auch nicht einfach irgendwo abladen. Da braucht man auch einen Komposthaufen, wenn man damit was machen will.
DeleteIch finde das hier schon teilweise sehr früh. Die Biohöfe machen ihre Hoffeste zum Erntedank oft schon Ende August und da bin ich noch im Sommer, ehrlich gesagt. :-)

DeleteHello Eva, my brother-in-law also moves his leaves to an area where they can decompose, which for him is directly behind his house in a wood. It looks like it was warm by you yesterday, as it was here. It went up to 60 here! I prefer your outdoor activity of raking leaves more than my indoor decluttering activity :) We'll go up to my sister's in CT for Thanksgiving. ReplyDeleteThat is what our neighbor does, he simply dumps them down the hill, but we have to carry it down the road to a "wild" spot. Yes, I took my jacket off because it was so warm. Very strange for November. I think it also got up to about 60 here, almost like spring. I hope you will have a wonderful Thanksgiving in CT. The other day we talked about the year when Jonathan and Charlotte came with you to celebrate in CT. Happy Thanksgiving!
DeleteHello Eva, every Thanksgiving when we walk along the lake shore, my sister remembers when Charlotte and Jonathan visited. Jonathan saw a particular bird during that visit that we've never seen again, and had never seen before. Could you ask him if he remembers this, and the name of the bird? I checked my blog to see if I had recorded it, but I actually didn't post more than the group photo. I have several additional photos that it would be nice to put up, so if can get around to doing so, I'll post a link.
