On Thursday, we did one of the walks from Jack's book. Some of the things on the walk, I had seen before on different walks with the children (although Peter had not seen them), but other things were new to all of us.
Am Donnerstag haben wir einen Londonspaziergang aus einem Londonführer gemacht. Einige der Höhepunkte kannte ich schon von anderen Spaziergängen, die ich mit den Kindern gemacht habe, doch Peter kannte sie noch nicht. Andere Höhepunkte kannten wir alle noch nicht.

This is a tide measuring station: inside the kiosk is a hidden tide monitoring station to make sure that the Thames does not flood the city.
Hier sieht man eine Häuschen, in dem sich ein Gerät befindet, das den Pegelstand der Themse mißt, um die Stadt vor Überschwemmungen zu schützen.
This sign belongs to Westminster's oldest pub and reminds the visitor of the profession of chairman (the first taxi in London).
Dieses Schild gehört zu der ältesten Kneipe in Westminster und erinnert den Besucher an den Beruf des Sänftenträgers (Sänften waren die ersten Londoner Taxis.)

In the evening, Peter and the girls went to see the musical Hadestown. Flora got free tickets to the show from some friends from her literature class. I don't like musicals very much and preferred to stay home and answer some letters.
Abends war Peter dann mit den Mädchen bei dem Musical Hadestown. Flora hatte kostenlose Eintrittskarten von einer ihrer Mitschülerinnen von ihrem Literaturkurs bekommen. Da mir Musicals nicht so liegen, bin ich zu Hause geblieben und habe Briefe geschrieben.
Hello Eva, I find the story of Orpheus and Eurydice so sad. A long time ago (probably when I was about 17) I watched Black Orpheus on tv when they would show classic movies on Saturday afternoons. I remember being so overcome with the beauty and tragedy of the story. How did the theatre goers like the show? How fun to traipse through London on one of Jack's walks :) The large iridescent cats are interesting. Are they by a particular artist? Hatchard's is one of my favorite places . . so many beautiful books in a cozy setting! It was nice to learn about the coade stone and the profession of chairman . . and to take a peek back in time on your last walk in that area. Happy Sunday xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteYes, it is a very sad story. I think they liked it, but said the music was not music that was very moving or music that is memorable. It was a bit loud. I did not see a sign about those cats, so I do not know. I have no idea why they were there. Hatchards is wonderful. I hope we will get to do more of Jack's walks. It is not so easy to do all the things we would like to do because I teach twice a week in the afternoons (and also need to prepare my classes) and Veronika has this French class once a week and Flora has to keep up with her CenterforLit class. Now we also started the Pet Club and then there is acting on Saturdays. And Peter has to teach most days of course. And we need to keep up with homeschooling to give Flora the best chance to do well on her CAT test and in a few years the SAT. She needs steady daily work.

ReplyDeleteMost of the pictures in this post here were taken with you camera! It was so blissfully quiet and I managed to write all outstanding letters, except one. Now I have to reply to a list of longer birthday e-mails. I seem to be so busy here. I am busy at home, but it feels different here. I am glad the card arrived. It is so cheery looking, I agree! I find it interesting that you have a choice of first and second class mail in this country. Germany and the U.S. don't offer that. I just heard that Denmark is getting rid of regular letter delivery. Isn't that sad?! You can still send letters, but there won't be any mailboxes anymore and it is going to be more complicated.

ReplyDeleteGern geschehen! Wir gehen nicht so oft die typischen Routen, sondern suchen uns Dinge, wo es nicht so viele Touristen gibt. Da lernt man auch eher Einheimische kennen, doch hin und wieder spazieren wir an den großen Sehenswürdigkeiten vorbei.
DeleteWir haben beides gemacht. Wir haben da ja gewohnt, und Besucher wollten natürlich das Übliche sehen. Aber wir sind auch oft selbst dahin und konnten dann gucken, was wir wollten. Und da geht man sowieso nicht immer an die gleichen Orte.
