St. Albans Cathedral
Kathedrale St. Albans

Walking on to the cathedral, which is such an interesting building! It combines so many different architectural styles and ages. And it has the most knowledgeable guides you can imagine. Each time we go, we talk to them and they always manage to show us something new.

Flora wanted to find this swan and other old Graffitis in the church. This is almost a tradition now.

We walked to St. Michael's church, another church we visit when we come to St. Albans.

Roman ruins (We did not go into the Verulamium Museum this time; St. Albans used to be the Roman city Verulamium, but we did look at the Roman city wall and gates.)
And here we are at another church: St. Stephen. Unfortunately, it was closed.

In case you want to learn more about St. Albans, watch this video.
We had to take the train back quite early because Veronika and Flora had tickets for "Romeo and Juliet."
That's so interesting about the scribblings, and the other animals look like sheep with elaborate collars. You did take a lot of photos and I can understand why - St. Albans is a lovely place and the church is beautiful and fascinating. Was everything within walking distance to the train station, and which train did you take? What is a puddingstone? A mixture of many? Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorite ballets. Chanda and I have watched many different videos together and she has seen it danced at the Royal Opera House also. So exciting! Who danced the major roles the night they saw it?!
ReplyDeleteThis church has many neat details to discover! Historians think those scribblings come from bored monks . . . True, about those sheep up there. There were some other animals, but I did not take pictures of them. No, you have to walk for about 30 minutes from the train station to the cathedral and about 20 minutes from the cathedral to get to St. Michael's. There are buses, but I have never understood the bus system in St. Albans :). The Thameslink is the best train to get there. A puddingstone is a very old boulder that looks like an English Christmas pudding (with raisins). There is one in NY: The Schunemunk puddingstone. I have to ask Veronika about who danced. She did not mention that. It was good, though, but they had to stand the whole time. I am sure I would have not been able to do that.
DeleteOh, I remember standing for events at the ballet and opera years ago. I didn't think I could stand for the Globe performances, but I found it was okay. I think being so close to the actors helps. I think you're a lot further back at the opera house. The stone does look like it's speckled with raisins! And the Schunnemunk State Park where the puddingstone is, is not far from us. I've never heard about it, however. The Thameslink looks like a nice rail line . . London seems to have good trains, though Morgan sometimes complains about the outer lines.
DeleteI am not sure how close they were to the stage. I have to ask again. I have really bad veins and long standing makes them very painful. Even here with all the museum visits, I am suffering in the evenings.
DeleteI think you have to visit the New York puddingstone :).
The Thameslink is good, but not cheap.
I'm sorry to hear about your leg pain due to your veins. This is not easy when you want to see so many wonderful things in the city. I know that you probably have researched ideas to alleviate the pain and I hope you find something new or that it gets better somehow on its own. I just bought new shoes as I had trouble with the shoes I have worn for several years due to bunions and sciatica. It's not easy dealing with these conditions as we grow older.
DeleteI have had this for ages now, and I do have some remedies (tablets, creams) I use, but still, after a long day walking around, the legs are just sore. Oh, I have fallen arches, so I have inserts made by a specialist. So I commiserate with your feet problems.
DeleteGreg has plantar fasciitis and also has special inserts for his shoes that he sends away for. It's good these special inserts can be found!
DeleteAh, how unfortunate! My inserts are still from Germany. I got them almost forty years ago and they are still in pretty good shape!
DeleteThat's very good!
DeleteThey are plastic, but cushioned and covered in leather.
DeleteThey sound very sturdy.
DeleteThey must be because they have lasted so long.
DeleteYes, that is a long time! :)
