Hörbe mit dem großen Hut/Herbie's Magical Hat

Ich lese Flora im Moment Hörbe mit dem großen Hut vor, und sie mag dieses Buch sehr.  Sie kennt jetzt fast alle Bücher von Otfried Preußler.

I am reading Herbie's Magical Hat to Flora right now and she loves it.  She has become a huge fan of Otfried Preußler and knows almost all of his books by now.

  1. Ha! You've switched your languages! :) It's good. It causes me to read the German more carefully, rather than rushing through. I usually have questions about how you structure your German sentences . . about the words you choose. Often they're quite different from the way you phrase the English.

This looks like a cute book. We've never read it before.

    1. I did! I thought a German book deserved a German entry before the English entry. Yes, I don't always do a word by word translation. There are several reasons for that: Sometimes a German speaker does not express things the same way as an English speaker does, sometimes there is cultural content a German speaker does not quite "get" (especially the older generation) or the other way round, and sometimes I think certain things simply are not interesting for either the English or German readers. So you will rarely find a word-by-word translation here. This is very observant of you!

This book is perfect for Flora's age. There is a lot about making "gnome soup," "gnome hats" (always with a detailed materials list), there is suspense and adventure and also you get to learn about nature. It is not one of Preußler's more know books, maybe because it is written for slightly younger children, but is is lovely.

    2. Yes, that is what is so interesting about learning another language: learning how people think in their language! :)

    3. True, but it is hard to figure out.

    4. Eva, do you think in both German and English equally now, or does one predominate?

    5. I think I do both, sometimes the thinking seems to be "above" language, kind of abstract. But when I get tired or hear too much English, I do think in German :).

(also der Ort, wo man Bücher ausleiht).

  4. Did my post come through on this? I commented on how you switched your languages, which is good for me I think because it makes me read the German first. Normally, I'm rushing along and don't take the time to do so. These books look very cute!

  5. I loved this book when I was little and I'd like to read it to my daughter. Do you know where I can buy an English version of it? Or French? Thank you for your help...

    1. Try Amazon.co.uk. There are a few listings on Amazon.com, but they are very expensive. You could also try local libraries. Sometimes Ebay has good deals, but I did not see it there for a good price.

    2. I don't know if there is a French version.
