I did not have to teach German on Monday because my students back home are on their February break. We did our regular school work in the morning and then went to an interesting exhibition at the Somerset House about the Salt Hedge in India.

We are reading this Gulliver book right now.

And it was warm enough to dry the laundry outside for a few hours.
Und man konnte sogar Wäsche einige Stunden draußen aufhängen, weil es wärmer war.

How interesting that there was a special salt office. I didn't realize that salt in the 1700's was a huge commodity. The block printed material is beautiful. I wonder how stiff it was. I would have felt compelled to touch it! The make up of the hedge it signifies is fascinating: thorny bushes, prickly pear, native brush, birds and snakes. Did they say how high it went? And the width? Did you find this exhibit on IanVisits?
ReplyDeleteYes, it is quite interesting. The Sommerset House housed the Salt Office, Stamp Office, and many others. The Stamp Office moved there in 1789. I read in the exhibition that the taxes the native people in India had to pay on their own salt were so high that it was cheaper for them to import salt from England! Isn't that crazy? There were fences around the cloth structures; no touching allowed. Nobody quite knows all the details about the hedge and there are no original drawings of it. Here is a very interesting article about it. It was probably 8 feet high. Yes, I found it on IanVisits :).
DeleteAh, I'll keep a bookmark on the Ian Visits page :) Yes, I read the article. That's very interesting. I can't believe how long it was and how they had to guard thousands of miles of hedge! I love the photo in the article of the woman walking along the salt flats, carrying the basket of salt on her head.
DeleteThey had a few photos like that in the exhibition. Ian is great! And that hedge is also so interesting. Somebody compared it to the Great Wall in China.
DeleteYour days are certainly varied and full of lots of interesting places to visit and things to see and do. I hope the camera is working well for you, love San xx
ReplyDeleteYes, some days are very quiet and ordinary, but we also try to do some interesting things we have not done so far. I love using your camera, San. I am still mainly in auto mode, but Veronika has ventured out trying different settings.
DeleteI'm glad the camera is working well xx
