We had to rush back because Flora had to be at Kentish City Farm to participate in Pet Club and Veronika had her online French class.

We have a Gravesend neighborhood in Brooklyn, just north of Coney Island, west of Sheepshead Bay. It looks like a nice outing. How far from central London, and on what line? That's very interesting about Pocahontas. Is that where she lived also, or just where she is buried? Were you able to hear the courting frogs? :)
ReplyDeleteReally! I bet those people came from this Gravesend,, probably all poor fishermen or chalk/lime workers. We took the Thameslink, the tubes do not go that far. It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes, if you take the slower train, but if you are willing to spend a lot more money, the travel time is just about 25 minutes to St. Pancras. There is not much information about the exact circumstances of Pocahontas' death. People know she, her son, and husband were on their way back to Virginia, sailing from London. But on the way, at Gravesend, "Rebecca," which was her Christian name, suddenly fell ill and died either on board ship or in Gravesend. Even the exact location of the grave is unknown because the original church St. Georg burnt down. She was buried among nobility graves under the current chancel. No, it was too cold, we did not hear the frogs and did not even see them this time.
DeleteYes, I'm sure you're right about the fishermen or chalk/lime workers! Gravesend here is by the water too, though a bit indirectly. The slower train is not so bad . . and it's nice to read or to knit. I think that's sad about Pocahontas/Rebecca. She must have wanted to see her family again.
DeleteGravesend here is also not directly at the North Sea, but at the end of the Thames. Yes, I agree about spending time on the train with reading or knitting, although these trains are still very crowded while they are driving through London. Her husband must have been devastated too. Very sad. He did not live very long either.
