Philadelphia
After a long day, Miriam arrived at 3:30 a.m. (!) back on campus in New Hampshire. Her first flight in Buffalo got canceled when she got to the airport and she could not leave Buffalo until the evening. Her plane from Philadelphia to Manchester was stuck in Wisconsin and that is why she did not get to leave Philadelphia until after midnight. A dorm father was waiting in Manchester and drove her all the way back to campus. What an odyssey!
Nach einem langen Tag und einer halben Nacht ist Miriam um halb vier morgens wieder bei ihrem College in New Hampshire angekommen. Ihr erster Flug von Buffalo nach Philadelphia ist abgesagt worden, als sie das Flughafengebäude betreten hat. So konnte sie erst abends weiterfliegen. In Philadelphia ging auch nichts, weil ihr Anschlußflugzeug noch in Wisconsin war. So konnte sie da erst nach Mitternacht weg. Ein Wohnheimsvater hat sie dann in Manchester abgeholt und in ihr Studentenwohnheim gebracht. Was für eine Odyssee!
Buffalo
Heute haben wir unsere Samstagsputzarbeiten gemacht und auch Floras Kleider durchgesehen und die, die zu klein geworden sind, weggepackt.

Was dem Amerikaner sein Flugzeug, ist dem Deutschen sein Zug. Und beide scheinen im Chaos zu stecken. Ein Gutes hat die Sache, unsere Kinder lernen, auch mit Widrigkeiten umzugehen.
ReplyDeleteIch glabue, ich habe dir das schon erzählt. Ein Freund meines Sohnes war mit einer internationalen Gruppe mit dem Zug unterwegs. Als sie feststeckten, waren alle Ausländer verzweifelt: Was zum Teufel sollen wir tun? Die Deutschen zückten einfach ihre Telefone und googelten, was die nächste Möglichkeit wäre, näher ans Ziel zu kommen. Sie sind mittlerweile so daran gewöhnt.
Ja, Züge gibt es hier ja kaum, obwohl Jonathan mit dem Zug aus Boston gekommen ist. Das dauert dann aber auch immer gleich acht oder mehr Stunden. Stimmt, das ist eine Lernerfahrung. Es war nur gut, daß jemand Miriam am anderen Ende abgeholt hat, sonst wäre sie wirklich verloren gewesen, weil sie ja kein Auto hat! Nein, das hast Du noch nicht erzählt. Das mit dem Googeln finde ich lustig. Leider kann man so etwas mit Flügen nicht tun, weil man sonst sein Geld verliert. Aber in London haben wir so ähnliche Dinge getan, wenn mal wieder eine U-Bahn oder ein Bus nicht fuhr.

ReplyDeleteYes, she was lucky to have the young man there. He was in Manchester because his wife just had her first baby and that baby was almost two months early. They are both still in the hospital and he was in town to be close by. He has been going back and fourth between Manchester and campus (about an hour) at the oddest times, so it was not such a big deal to pick up Miriam.
DeleteI used to work with soapstone as a teenager and loved the material. I also really like her cat. And yes, Leo is a very eccentric cat. This evening he was seriously thinking about joining Flora in the bathtub!
Na ja, wenn ein Flug nicht stattfindet, muss die Gesellschaft ja dafür sorgen, dass man einen neuen bekommt. Das macht die Bahn nicht.

DeleteI love Leo! He's so cute! And so funny. Veronika's cat is wonderful too . . and poor Miriam . . what a trip. Thank goodness she had a nice person to meet her after such a trek.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! Yes, she would have been stuck in Manchester otherwise. Her trip was almost as long as flying to London.
Delete(P.S. I just pulled Cricket out of the garbage . . we have a child lock, but I often forget to latch it when cleaning up and washing dishes at the sink. I bet Leo even has better manners than Cricket . . )
ReplyDeleteOh, we did the same with Leo. Peter bought him some squeezable treats from Hartz with tuna. He loved them and was trying to get the package out of the garbage. But the garbage was out in the kitchen and not in the kitchen cabinet under the sink, where it belongs, so no wonder. Leo has not been able to open the cabinets, which is good. I am not sure, if he has better manners. He likes to get into all kinds of fixes.
