Animal Signs/Spuren von Tieren

I am still here, but Miriam is using my laptop (day and night it seems) to do her Zoom classes for Russian History and also write a last long paper for that class.  She uses my office on campus or the library for that.  Peter is still "owner" of my desk at home.  I guess I have lost two desks now.  So by the time I get my laptop back, I can check my e-mail and mark off the things we worked on on the Simply Charlotte Mason Organizer.

Today, we had a home ecology class on "animal signs."  The snow provided us with some great footprints and we again learned a lot from our guide Conrad.

Bird tracks (probably from a Junco)
Vogelfußspuren, wahrscheinlich von einer Winterammer

Holes, made by beetles
Löcher, von Käfern gebohrt

The Black Cherry tree from summer.
Die Traubenkirsche vom Sommer

Conrad is showing us where the wing of a bird that just flew up made an imprint.

A gorgeous blooming witch-hazel
Eine wunderschöne blühende Zaubernuß

There was a catbird's nest inside.
In der Mitte war ein Katzendrosselnest.

Flora is holding our track identification sheet.
Flora hält unser Identifikationsblatt für die Fußabdrücke.

I should really write more about our current main lessons.  Veronika is doing organic chemistry.  Here we are playing a game you can download for free at this site.

And Flora is still doing American geography.  We had planned to go back to ancient myths and history, but decided to stay a bit longer with this block: The beauty of homeschooling!

Miriam is doing a course on economics with Hillsdale College.  (We are also using additional materials.)  The professor, Gary Wolfram, is an engaging speaker.

  1. Gary Wolfram is very good! I never knew Economics could be so interesting! It's fun hearing about your lessons, and it's nice that Flora enjoys American geography. Does Veronika like the Organic Chemistry? That Russian History class keeps Miriam busy!

I love seeing the witch hazel in the wintertime, and it was special finding the catbird's nest in it. It looked cold out, but I could tell it was another wonderful outdoor class with Conrad :)

    1. Yes, I like his style! He is also quite funny. I think she likes the chemistry. It is quite a bit hands-on and there is not much teacher-prep for me, which is good. This is the first time I am using this particular book and so far it is wonderful. Yes, the history class has a lot of readings and they are all online because they simply don't exist in book-format. They are also too long to print out our the printing function has been disabled. I think Miriam wants to do a good job. It is her first time she has to write a longer research paper and she will also get a grade from a different professor (she has taken classes with Peter). All the other students are older of course and that makes it a bit harder for her.

The witch hazel was amazing. It was cold, the girls complained about cold feet after our long walk (almost 2 hours). But it was fun and informative. Conrad actually was an English Lit. major in college, but now he is getting a training in being a nature guide because this has always been his passion.
