Today was our first home ecologist class of the school year. The title was "insects." We met at the beautiful nature center. They had a display of the wildflowers that are blooming right now.
Heute war unsere erste Naturklasse für Kinder, die zu Hause unterrichtet werden. Diese Klassen werden vom Staate New York finanziert, was ich immer wieder erstaunlich finde. Der Titel heute war "Insekten". Wir haben uns in dem wunderschönen Naturzentrum getroffen. Es gab eine kleine Ausstellung von den Blumen, die im Moment in der Natur blühen.

Our first nature guide was Conrad.
Unser erster Naturkundelehrer war Conrad.
Then we met with Elijah, who is the head of the nature center. With him we released three monarch butterflies. We tagged them and let them go. This is part of the Monarch Watch program. We have done this before, but it is fascinating to do again.
Danach haben wir uns mit Elijah getroffen, der das Naturzentrum leitet. Mit ihm haben wir drei Monarchfalter freigelassen und sie mit einem Aufkleber von Monarch Watch versehen. Das ist ein Projekt, das herauszufinden versucht, wie die Falter nach Mexiko fliegen. Wir haben das schon öfter gemacht, aber es ist immer wieder spannend es neu zu erleben.

Nach der Klasse haben wir dann zu Mittag im Restaurant des Parks gegessen, was für uns eine seltene Angelegenheit ist.
I finally went into a diner (the only place with food and drink that is open) to order a cup of coffee. I also did some grading of Veronika's Latin.
It looked different: No table cloths, they had removed the carpet and put down linoleum, no fancy menus (just paper copies), but still good food.
Alles sah ein wenig anders aus: Keine Tischtücher, der Teppichboden war jetzt Linoleum, keine schicken Speisekarten, sondern ausgedruckte Blätter, aber das Essen war immer noch gut.
Of course, we had to say hi to the falls.
Natürlich mußten wir die Wasserfälle begrüßen.
Then it was time to drive back home so the girls could get ready for ballet class.
Dann mußten wir nach Hause fahren, damit sich die Mädchen für Ballett umziehen konnten.

This is the library where I normally sit and work while the girls are dancing. They are doing some major renovation project and it is closed!
Hier ist die Bücherei, wo ich mich meistens aufhalte, wenn die Mädchen Ballett haben. Dort finden im Moment große Renovierungsarbeiten statt und man kann nicht rein.
So I walked up and down the street looking for a place to stay. The bookstore is also closed and so are most other shops. I passed these signs about the old cemetery.
Also bin ich die Hauptstraße auf- und abgegangen, um einen Aufenthaltsort zu finden, aber fast alles hat wegen Corona zu, auch der Buchladen. Ich bin an Schildern über den alten Friedhof vorbeigekommen.
Schließlich habe ich ein Lokal gefunden, wo man auch rein durfte; das einzige an der Hauptstraße. Ich habe mir eine Tasse Kaffee bestellt und Veronikas Latein korrigiert.
The girls survived dancing with masks and only five students. Things are still very strange.
Die Mädchen haben es geschafft, mit Maske und nur zu fünft zu tanzen. Es ist wirklich alles noch sehr eigenartig.
Your butterfly photos are beautiful! It's interesting to see the tags on their wings. What a nice nature center you have :) I love how they displayed the flowers that are currently blooming. It's a good way to learn.
ReplyDeleteThe food looked very delicious at the park! What a fun treat (and the falls are breathtaking!) I'm glad you finally found a place to sit down while the girls were in ballet class, so you could work with a warm cup of coffee.
I guess this is the only way to tag butterflies. After all, a metal ring would not work. Yes, they always have those seasonable displays of the blooming plants. I think it is a great idea!
DeleteIt will be a problem once it gets colder with finding a place to go to. That diner is fine, but they not really think people will just go there and drink coffee and stay forever! They expect you to order food, but who wants to eat a meal at 4:00 p.m.? I think the library has run out of money and cannot finishe the renovations! So all parents are stuck.
Hmmmm . . that is unfortunate about the library and about the diner. I guess that leaves parents to sit in their car, or to sit in the ballet studio with masks?
DeleteYes, that is what some parents did, sitting in the car. We are not even allowed to enter the studio, due to small number of people that are allowed in it. The teacher cannot have more than six students at one time and no other people. There is no separate waiting area for parents, so you would sit right where the dancers are.
DeleteSo ein toller Ausflug! Das wäre schön, wenn es so etwas hier auch gäbe, ein solch schönes und idyllisches Naturzentrum. Wir sind immer ins Lina Hähnle Haus gegangen im Katinger Watt wenn wir in St Peter Ording zu Besuch waren. Das war so schön dort, man konnte sich Dinge erklären lassen, allein durchstreifen oder Kaffee trinken oder Führungen machen. Das hat uns gut gefallen. Euer Ausflug sieht sehr schön aus, wirkich.
ReplyDeleteWie interessant, dass Du gerade jetzt vom Monarchfalter schreibst. In dem Buch des Ethnobotanikers, von dem ich auch das Kräuterbuch habe, habe ich vor drei Tagen erst gelesen, dass die Monarchfalter sich von den in den USA heimischen Seidenpflanzen ernähren. Sie nehmen wohl beim Fressen giftige Stoffe auf, reichern diese an und schützen sich mit Hilfe dieser gespeicherten Giftstoffe gegen Fressfeinde! Das fand ich interessant.
