Miriam just finished a week of college summer program at Christendom College in Virginia. Here you see her hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Miriam hat gerade eine Woche bei Christendom College in Virginia zu Ende gemacht. Hier wandert sie in den Blue Ridge Mountains, die zu den Appalachen gehören.

Happy Sunday, Eva. The sweet peas are so pretty, and it must have been nice hearing Jonathan read aloud. I see Charlotte is keeping up with her delicious treats, and Miriam's summer intensive must have been wonderfully fun and uplifting. Did she have to keep a physical distance and wear masks when inside? Or did everyone take a test beforehand? xoxo
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday! It is so sweet to watch: I have been reading aloud to all children all their lives and now they are reading aloud to each other :). I think Miriam had a wonderful time. Peter drove her to VA last Sunday, not stopping for food because he thought that would be safer. He turned around and came back so he would not have to go into quarantine. There was not mandatory mask wearing in place because Virginia does not have such a law at the moment. However, some students did wear masks There was some distancing, but not much. They checked for symptoms very thoroughly, though, and used a lot of hand sanitizer. There were about 50 attendants! No testing, most places can do that because it is too expensive. Now she is in NH, at Magdalen College. Somebody from Christendom drove her to D.C., she flew to Boston, and somebody from Magdalen College picked her up. They have to wear masks at Magdalen and take their temperature. You can tell that the rules in the Northeast are much stricter. She will be in NH for two weeks and that way will avoid having to go into quarantine upon her return. We were reluctant about letting her go to VA, but then we thought it would be probably fine because Christendom is not in the area of VA with many cases. Let's pray she will stay healthy! Charlotte really wanted to go to her ballet intensive, but they moved it to Florida, which is not the safest place to go to right now.
DeleteI think I replied under San's comment :P That actually worked out well that she could travel directly from VA to NH. She must be having a good time. It'll be fun to hear how she liked the different campuses and programs.
DeleteYes, now she does not have to quarantine in NY anymore! Magdalen has a Socratic style of teaching, but Christendom more the traditional style. Both colleges do a lot for their students. She is coming home Saturday.

ReplyDeleteGosh Miriam is really busy, is she trying out colleges in preparation for attending this September or does she have another year at home with you. Seems like yesterday when they were all so small, eh? I will pray that she stays well and safe xx
ReplyDeleteNo, no, she has one more year! She will be in grade 12 this fall. We had signed her up for these summer programs before Corona ever happened. The week in Virginia was supposed to happen in June, but they pushed it back to late July. The one in New Hampshire also had a time change. Yes, so hard to believe that Number 3 has to think about what to do after school. We are scheduled to go to London again in 2022. If this happens, she will probably come with us and go to college the fall of that year.
DeleteHello Eva, I was away all last week. Greg and I left without warning Monday night, the 3rd, in order to make sure the deck furniture at my mom and dad's home was safely put away for the hurricane. It would be nice for Miriam to visit London again with you, and it's great that she was still able to attend her college summer intensives. They sound so fun!!
DeleteI think that was a smart move! We did not get much of the hurricane, but Miriam was without power for several days. A woman in her area was even killed. A tree had fallen onto her apartment and went right through the roof.
DeleteSchöne Sonntagsfotos sind das wieder, Eva! Das Gebäck sieht ganz lecker aus und Bibliotheken mag ich sehr gerne, das sind richtige Orte der Ruhe finde ich. Wickenblüten sind richtig schön, vor allem in der Vase. Im Garten mache ich sie aber immer weg da wuchern sie sonst einfach über alles. Geht Miriam dieses Jahr schon aufss College?
ReplyDeleteDanke, Angelika! Ja, so eine Bibliothek kann wie ein Paradies sein :). Hier wachsen Wicken oft wild. Nein, nein, Miriam kommt in die 12 Klasse, aber diese Sommerkurse bieten Studenten den Vorgeschmack von einem College. Miriam ist die erste, die solche Wochen macht. Jonathan hat nur mehrere Tage bei Colleges reingeschnuppert, meist auch mit Übernachtung. Alle Einträge, die mit "Santa Barbara" gekennzeichnet sind, berichten von so einem Aufenthalt. Charlotte hat das gar nicht gemacht, doch hat sie vom Thomas More College einen Shakespeare Workshop mitgemacht. Also, Miriam kann frühestens im Herbst 2021 ins College!
DeleteDas ist doch schön, dann hast Du sie noch ein wenig zu Hause. Gab es diese Wochen vorher nicht und die Colleges haben sich umorientiert? Hier gibt es ja sowas überhaupt nicht, man kann mal als Gasthörer reinhören aber das war es dann auch. Ich finde das gut, dass die Colleges sowas machen, wie soll man sich sonst entscheiden können?
DeleteJa, das stimmt. Ich glaube, als Peter zum College gegangen ist, gab es das nicht. Dann haben die Colleges Schnuppertage angeboten: Man kann am Unterricht teilnehmen und bei vielen Colleges im Wohnheim übernachten. Jonathan hat das bei Thomas Aquinas College in Kalifornien, Christendom in Virginia, Catholic University in Washington und Thomas More in New Hampshire gemacht. Das ist kostenlos. Diese Wochen, die Colleges in den Ferien anbieten, sind für Schüler gedacht, die erleben möchten, wie an dem jeweiligen College unterrichtet wird. Oft haben sie ein Thema, Studenten müssen lesen, aber es gibt auch Gesellschaftstanz, Singen, Messe in der Kirche und Seminare. Wandern tun sie auch! Diese Wochen können bis zu 2000 Dollar kosten, doch hat Miriam schon zweimal ein Stipendium dafür gewonnen, daß wir kaum etwas bezahlen mußten.
DeleteDas finde ich großartig dass so etwas angeboten wird, wirklich. Wenn man immer nur in der Schule gesessen hat und sich dann einfach entscheiden soll - woran soll man die Entscheidung denn sonst festmachen? Am Aussehen der Gebäude? Mit Stipendium ist es ja noch viel besser, das freut mich für Euch, das ist ja eine richtige Hilfe!
DeleteDas stimmt, ich finde das auch eine gute Idee, besonders weil Colleges in Amerika anders als Schulen sind. Beide Colleges, wo sie jetzt ist, sind sehr klein, aber das macht ihren Reiz aus. Manche Studenten entscheiden sich bestimmt für ein College, weil sie es hübsch (oder "cool") finden :).
