It is hard to believe that August has started: Jonathan and Charlotte will have to go back to their colleges and our own college will also start with classes. In fact, Jonathan has to leave in two days! So we decided to go to the waterfalls one more time before he is leaving us. Charlotte could not be with us because she is doing an online dance intensive. Peter also had to keep working on the computer.
Kaum zu glauben, daß August schon angefangen hat: Jonathan und Charlotte müssen zum College zurück und auch unser eigenes College fängt diesen Monat mit Lehrveranstaltungen an. Jonathan muß sogar schon in zwei Tagen zurück! Also sind wir heute dann nochmal zu den Wasserfällen gefahren, auch wenn Charlotte und Peter nicht mitkommen konnten. Charlotte macht einen Ballettintensivkurs (online) und Peter mußte auch am Computer arbeiten.

On the way home, we stopped to get some fresh, local corn.
Auf dem Heimfahrt, haben wir frischen Mais gekauft.
This morning, we had a wildlife rehabilitator come by and fix all the holes our house in order to prevent critters to spend their winter with us. He even fixed a huge gap on the roof and thought it would help with the heating bill.
Heute morgen war ein Wildtierretter bei uns, um alle Löcher am Haus zu verschließen. Durch diese Löcher kommen nämlich im Winter Tiere ins Haus, die dann unsere Vorräte mit uns teilen wollen. Er hat sogar eine große Lücke auf dem Dach geschlossen und glaubt, daß unsere Heizkosten dadurch sinken werden.

Bei Euch an den Wasserfällen ist richtig was los! Schön, so einen Wasserplatz für die heiße Jahreszeit zu haben. Floras Foto ist schön, Deine Kinder lassen sich wenigstens gern fotografieren! In diesem Jahr habe ich bislang nur eine einzige Libelle gesehen. Hibiskus hat meine Freundin zwei ineinander gepflanzt. Das ist ein riesengroßer Strauch geworden der in lila und weiß blüht. Tolle rote Blüten hat Eurer! Salat mit Früchten drin und Nüssen mag ich auch gern! Heute ist es hier noch kühl aber ab morgen bräuchte ich vermutlich auch Wasserfälle, denn es soll jetzt eine Woche bei weit über 30 Grad geben.
ReplyDeleteJa, es waren viele Kinder da. Die Fälle kennen nur die Einheimischen, die stehen in keinem Führer. Ich glaube, Amerikaner lassen sich eher fotografieren, das gehört hier zum "guten Ton". An diesen Fällen wimmelt es nur so von Libellen, sie sind immer auf meinem Buch gelandet. Unser Hibiskus ist ein bißchen zu groß, aber die Blüten sind einmalig. Es gibt hier auch lila und weiß als Hibiskusfarbe, doch dann ist der Strauch viel kleiner. Das klingt ja nicht so erfreulich mit den über 30 Grad! Dann ist das so wie bei uns hier.

Jonathan and Charlotte are returning early is that to play catch up or are classes more spread out during the week due to social distancing measures? I hope Peter manages to have some time away from the computer screen and zoom meetings, poor guy seems like he has worked none stop this summer break xx
ReplyDeleteIt was nice and it was not as hot as the last time, but still warm enough (28 degrees) to go swimming.
DeleteAll colleges will start early. Most will have two weeks of "watching students" or, in the case of New York, put all students in single quarantine when they come from a "do not travel" state, which is almost all of the U.S., except the Northeast. Then they will have classes with masks and social distancing and no breaks until the end of November. The semester will be over by then (or finals will be online). Students will not be allowed to go home during the semester or travel far. So the classes will not be more spread out, but will simply start earlier and end earlier. The spring semester will start early/mid January.
Well, Peter has not much time to be away from the screen. He is grading his last summer classes right now and is getting ready for the new semester. He is also writing for journals and all the organization meetings for the new semester are via Zoom. Yes, he has worked non-stop, but a professor only gets paid nine months. So, if you want to make money during the last three months of the year, aka summer, you need to teach online or find some other occupation in order to feed your family :).
Ah, I see . . two weeks quarantine (I think I, also, asked about this somewhere) . . so is Jonathan in with a roommate?
DeleteYes, two weeks for many students, but Jonathan and Charlotte don't have to do that in PA because they come from NY and PA does not require students from NY to go into quarantine. Jonathan is a prefect this year and thus does not have a roommate. That is why he left early They are having two weeks of orientation.
