Das Rote U/The Scarlet U

Flora and I picked up a German inter-library loan book: The Scarlet U  (sometimes the English title is The Red U).  The author is Wilhelm Matthießen.  My mother read another book by the same author to me when I was little.  I think the English translation of that one is The Potato King and Other Folktales.  I loved that book and read it to all my children.   Later, I discovered another title by the same author in German, but I think there is no English translation.  There is one other English book by him, simply called Folktales, but I am not sure what the German original of that one is.  All his books are simply lovely.  The Scarlet U is for older children (9 and up).  It is about a group of children who get secret messages by the "Red U" and is a detective story.  

Flora und ich haben Das Rote U von Wilhelm Matthießen bei der Bibliothek abgeholt.  Ich habe es mir durch Fernleihe aus Texas besorgt!  Meine Mutter hat mir schon Das alte Haus vorgelesen, was ich als Kind sehr geliebt habe.  Später habe ich Die alte Gasse entdeckt.  Das Rote U ist für ältere Kinder und ziemlich spannend geschrieben.  Ich habe meinen Kindern Das alte Haus und Die alte Gasse vorgelesen und so die Tradition weitergereicht.  

This week, Flora and I are on our own.  Miriam and Veronika are working at the living history museum for their summer camps.  Their work is very different this year: masks, no costumes, and visitors are only allowed on Thursdays and Fridays.  They are having fun, nevertheless.  Miriam is helping with  the "Farm Kids" camp and Veronika is helping with the "Huck Finn" camp.   Peter is driving them there each morning (one hour driving) and then drives on to the grocery store Wegmans.  He works in their cafe until the late afternoon, when he picks the girls up again.   

Diese Woche sind Flora und ich alleine.  Miriam und Veronika arbeiten im Freilichtmuseum.  Ihre Arbeit dort ist jedoch nicht so wie gewöhnlich: Sie müssen Masken tragen, es gibt keine Kostüme und Besucher werden nur donnerstags und freitags ins Museum gelassen.  Trotzdem gefällt es ihnen.  Miriam hilft bei dem Ferienlager, das auf dem Bauernhof des Museums stattfindet, und Veronika hilft bei den Kindern, die ein Lager über Huckleberry Finn machen.  Peter fährt sie jeden Morgen hin (eine Stunde Fahrtzeit), sitzt im Café des Lebensmittelladens Wegmans und holt sie dann am späten Nachmittag wieder ab.
