Halloween

Pumpkins/Kürbisse

Earth and Sky dinner: Casserole made out of red potatoes, the earth, and apples, the sky, with eggs, almond milk, a bit of cheese and butter, and pumpkin seeds
Himmel und Erde zum Mittagessen: Als Auflauf mit Eiern, Mandelmilch, ein bißchen Käse und Butter und Kürbiskernen

 Salad
Salat

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
The first one said, "Oh my it's getting late."
The second one said, "There are witches in the air."
The third one said, "But we don't care!"
The fourth one said, "Let's run and run and run."
The fifth one said, "We are ready for some fun!"
Then OOOhh OOOhh went the wind
And out went the lights
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

(There is also a version where the second pumpkin says the line of the third one and vice versa.)

 Two witches
Zwei Hexen

 Flora was a princess.
Flora war eine Prinzessin.

Charlotte was a gypsy, but I did not get a picture of her whole costume.
Charlotte war eine Zigeunerin, aber ich habe kein Foto von ihrem ganzen Kostüm bekommen.

Coming back home from trick-or-treating: It was quite cold and rainy, but they were gone for two hours.
Wieder zurück von ihrem Halloweenrundgang.  Es war ziemlich kalt und regnerisch, aber sie waren zwei Stunden unterwegs.

  1. Have you heart Maurice Sendak's poem? It is Alex's favorite.

    October
    In October I'll be host
To witches, goblins and a ghost
I'll serve them chicken soup on toast
    Whoopy once, whoopy twice
    Whoopy chicken soup with rice

We change the 'Whoopy chicken soup with rice' to 'Whoopy chicken soup with flies'

Looks like your kids had a blast!

    1. No, I have not heard that one. Thanks for sharing. I will add that one to our collection! Funny about the soup. Did your children dress up?

  3. Love the quirky costumes! I hope the candy was rationed ;-)

    1. Well, half of the candy has gluten, so we always take that away. Some has corn syrup and we also take most of that away. So there is not so much left and there is no candy allowed before lunch. So the candy will last a long time and Peter's students are always happy to get so much candy from him. The children did get some apples and funny balloons instead of candy at two places. That was good!

We did not have much time for fancy costumes and we were not going to spend any money on them. They had to use what was at hand. Flora changed her costume many times. She wanted a crown, but it was raining so hard that we settled on a golden head scarf.

  5. Your witches have two very adorable black cats. I think Korrina has the same black cat as Veronika! Flora looks a very sad princess :) and Charlotte a very pretty gypsy :) It was nice to hear the pumpkin poem again. We used to sing it every year in our circle when the girls were little. Happy Halloween! I hope you have also been having a nice All Saint's and All Soul's Day(s). Did Jonathan go trick or treating also?

    1. Really! I think one cat is from Germany. Flora was sad because she could not wear a crown because of all the rain. That is why she looks a bit sad :). Charlotte did have a unique costume: socks with holes in two different colors, a Swedish "gypsy top," an old skirt of mine with a leather belt, leather boots, a tattered purse, and her head scarf (just a piece of torn cloth). I think she originally had something different in mind, but could not find what she needed for that. All Saints' and All Souls' were celebrated with a few picture books and we will display our deceased loved ones, but I have not had a chance to do that so far. We will also pray for them. No, Jonathan did not go anymore. He thought he was too old. Happy Halloween! You poor thing! What kind of wagon did you not see? I bet you were more than glad to be home again :).

    2. My nephew thought he was too old to collect candy and so would not take a bag, but he put lots of loot in his pants' pockets :)

The wagon was just a little red one I guess! I didn't see it!! I just tripped over it!!

I'm always glad to be home, even if it's crazy NYC. I like my apartment though I do often crave the neighbors' beautiful townhouses!

    3. Oh, I thought it was a car, ha ha! So a toy kind of wagon?
