Exploring Math with a Kindergarten Child/Mathematik vor der ersten Klasse

Veronika has been asking to do something with numbers.  I got out our base 10 materials and the book Teaching Montessori in the Home: The School Years, which our college library has.  We have used RightStart Math with Jonathan and Charlotte for grades 2 and up, which is a Montessori based program, but I have never used any Montessori math materials before grade 1.  So for now we are more or less getting familiar with different math concepts through hands-on materials.  We will also play some math games for little people.

Monday is watercolor day for Miriam and Veronika.  We chose painting with blue today, because it is so cold, icy, and snowy outside.  The perfect color for winter.

Charlotte and I have finished The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt and looked at colorful pictures in a special issue of National Geographic.  We will move on to the Egyptian afterlife and also examine some of the Egyptian gods.

Jonathan learned about Gregorian Chant today.  We listened to Learning About Gregorian Chant.

Miriam is learning to read music right now.  She has played a whole song on the recorder from the music in front of her.

She has also designed a title page for her Old Testament main lesson book.

  5. Hello Dorina, we got some more snow today. Peter was out shopping and almost didn't make it back. Julius does not like this kind of weather.

  7. One year the snow was so bad that he had to spend the night in a hotel leaving all the groceries out in the car. It takes about an hour to get to the next really good grocery store. Sometimes we have no snow and the village where our church is (about 12 minutes by car up the hill) has a snow storm. Sometimes the weather in Buffalo is really bad, but we get nothing. Sometimes it's the other way round, the Southern Tier is really hard hit and Buffalo just gets a flurry. Very strange around here indeed.
