Commencement 2023/Abschlußfeier 2023

Baccalaureate Mass
Abschlußmesse

We arrived half an hour early and met Charlotte before the chapel.

It was still quite empty when we arrived.

The music group was practicing for the Mass.
Die Musikgruppe hat für die Messe geübt.

After Mass, Charlotte went back to her apartment to continue packing.  The rest of us drove downtown and we had some lunch.

There was not much time because the arena, where the commencement was held, opened its doors at 1:30 p.m. and we knew it would be crowded.  Commencement did not begin until 3:00 p.m., but we wanted to get a good seat.  Charlotte drove with her friends.  They also had to be there at 1:30 and line up in the basement.  There was some back and forth texting with us about what to do with her hood: She had some funny closure and nobody had told them how to attach it.  We tried to give some advice and finally all was fine.

Pretty mural on the way to the arena.
Schönes Wandgemälde auf dem Weg zur Arena.

The seats were filling up quickly.

There was music playing before the actual beginning.
Es gab Musik, bevor alles angefangen hat.

At 3:00 o'clock, the procession began.

All graduates and professors have been seated.
Alle Studenten und Professoren sitzen jetzt.

Bishop Lawrence was also attending.
Der Bischof von Erie, Bischof Lawrence, hat auch teilgenommen.

Walking to the stage: Charlotte is the one on the right.
Charlotte (rechts) geht zur Bühne.

It was hard to take pictures because of the distance, but we will get official pictures later.  I do not have a picture of her receiving her diploma.

Graduate Charlotte: Her tassel is on the left!
Frischgebackene Absolventin: Die Quaste ist jetzt links!

Clapping for all graduates

No idea what Peter is dong here!
Keine Ahnung, was Peter hier macht!

Dance position (I could not move my leg so well because I had slipped on a wet spot in the cafeteria the night before and have a swollen and painful knee.)

And most of the evening was spent packing, loading the car, saying good-bye to friends, and driving back to New York.  We arrived after midnight, but all went well.

    1. Thanks so much, San! We are very happy for her. We are not quite sure what the fall will bring. She wants to teach at her old ballet studio over the summer.

    1. It is getting better! I am glad I did not break anything. The workers at the cafeteria were emptying out the ice cubes trays under the salads and spilled water all over the floor. It was their last day of work there; they close for the summer. I slipped on some of the spilled water because it was hard to see on the tiled floor. My knee hit the ground and then twisted backward (it looked like the leg had snapped off). Everybody was very concerned and they brought ice for the knee right away. I sat on a chair applying the ice and Peter got the car so I did not have to walk. Charlotte had arnica gel and Voltarol, which she had to get from her apartment. I had arnica tablets. I used all of those and later took two ibuprofen tablets. I was pretty miserable during the night, but it was better when I got up and now it is getting better every day.

  3. So exciting! Congratulations! You must all be proud. She has worked so hard. It's fun to see the ceremony in the arena and the close up photos you took of her came out well. It's nice to see you all together and it looks like it was a lovely day for graduation. The campus is pretty. It was such a busy weekend with the festivities and packing! You must have all been quite tired when you arrived home. I hope your knee continues to heal well.

    1. Yes, she has worked hard and it has not always been easy, but she graduated with "Latin honors." It was a busy weekend, as was the one before when we picked up Miriam. I love Mercyhurst's campus. I reinsured my knee today because I turned it too quickly. Now I need to rest it again. Silly me!

  4. Thank goodness for ice packs, arnica and voltarol gel and ibuprofen although that fall sounded pretty horrendous! I’m glad to read that your knee is healing nicely, sending hugs xx

    1. Yes, so true! The young men who had caused the water on the floor felt really bad about my fall. Unfortunately, I moved too quickly today and twisted that knee again. Now it needs a bit more rest.
