Heinrich von Kleist: Der zerbrochne Krug (Dieter Dorn, BR 1990)/"The Broken Jug"

We finished reading, in German, The Broken Jug.  Today, we started watching this 1990 version of it.
There is also a version from 1937, which we might watch afterwards.  The 1937 version does have English subtitles.

Wir haben "Den zerbrochenen Krug" zu Ende gelesen und heute mit dieser Inszenierung angefangen.  Es gibt auch eine von 1937, die wir vielleicht danach sehen wollen.

  1. I thought the 1937 version was wonderfully silly and fun. What were they trying to do with the 1990 version? Which one do you find more in keeping with the written play by Kleist?

    1. The older one is the one that is more known, but it does not have the whole text. The 1990 is the only one that used the long version of the play and that is why it is interesting.

    2. So far, I think the characters of the 1990 version are quite close to the play, except maybe the servants. I will give you an update after the older version on my opinion.

    3. Oh, that is interesting. I probably should read the play!

    4. It is actually quite funny, but the language is kind of "earthy." I have no idea what an English translation would look like. It is also quite critical.

    5. We finished both movies. The older one is "clearer." You know more what is going on, but the long version adds quite a bit of nuances. So both are good!
