The Golden Hinde: A replica of Drake's ship
Die Goldene Hirschkuh: Drakes Schiff nachgebaut
HMS Belfast: Jonathan toured it and compared it to Buffalo's warships which we visited a few years ago, but I never managed to post pictures of that visit.
Southwark Cathedral: You cannot take pictures inside, but I really like this church and we visited it 13 years ago as well.
London Bridge: Quite ugly, isn't it? Nothing is left of THE London Bridge.

That night, Skype was down completely so I could not teach my students. However, I had send them an outline for class today and they worked through that outline on their own, comparing answers to their exercises. I was so glad I had typed up that outline! Otherwise they would have lost a class, which would have been not good because their final is coming up soon.

Today, we sent seven suitcases to Germany and two to the United States. We also went to see the Benjamin Franklin House, the National Gallery (again), and watched the Swiss Glockenspiel. Charlotte and Jonathan are off to see Mayerling at the Royal Opera House tonight. It is their opening night.
Well . . I've seen the real London Bridge and walked on the real London Bridge years ago when traveling cross country with my mom and dad. It's now in Arizona, in Lake Havasu City. Funny, isn't it? It was dismantled in 1967 and the reconstruction was completed in 1971, which is when we probably saw it. Maybe next time I go to my parents' house on Montauk, I'll see if I can find the slide of us standing on it. I remember finding the experience very odd and not understanding why it was in Arizona! Why would they sell their beautiful bridge?!
ReplyDeleteSomebody in the Kenwood House told us that. They have a painting of the "real" one (there have been several bridges over the centuries). She also told us that the way the traffic was regulated on the bridge turned England into a country where you drive on the left hand side. I do not know if that part was true. I think it is so neat that you got to see it. And what a crazy idea to ship it to the U.S.!!
ReplyDeleteI just looked at the bridge in AZ, but that is not the bridge from the painting. The bridge in the painting was a medieval bridge. Here is more about the one I was thinking of.
DeleteThat is a beautiful oil painting. I love it. Arizona has the 19th century one which replaced this lovely medieval one you linked to. I wonder if they saved some of the medieval stones? That's interesting about the traffic . . ! How did Jonathan and Charlotte like the Mayerling ballet?
ReplyDeleteI have not heard that anybody has saved any stones, but how knows? Maybe the people won't tell if they saved some so nobody would ask them to give the stones back.
DeleteThey liked it, but they thought the main male dancer, Edward Watson, was not as good as they thought he would be.
Delete:)!
DeleteI am so sorry we did not get a chance to meet :-(. We looked into visiting from Gloucester but the two hour return journey would have cost £175.00! I had thought of driving but in all honestly the return journey home almost finished me off! I have battled with incessant nausea and now have a really bad back injury. Wishing you a safe journey to Germany xx
ReplyDeleteYes, but we might be back in two years, maybe it will work then. I know how expensive these train rides can get. Without the group discount, we would have never gone to Dover. I hope you are feeling better by now. We made it safely to Germany.
DeleteGlad to know you arrived safely and hopefully next time you are over we will get to meet :-) xx
DeleteI hope so too!
DeleteEva, I have really enjoyed seeing all the photos and reading about your time in England. I think that you have seen and done more than I did in 15 years of living in London. I want to go back and visit all the places I missed!! What an incredible experience for you all. Thank you for taking the time to share it here.
ReplyDeleteHello Catherine, I am so glad that I brought back some memories for you. 15 years living in London is a long time! Maybe now you really have to go back.
