Yesterday we "traveled" to Switzerland to celebrate Holy Thursday. The Einsiedeln Abbey had its Mass online.
Gestern haben wir in der Schweiz die Gründonnerstag Messe gefeiert. Kloster Einsiedeln hatte eine online Messe.
Our traditional Holy Thursday soup, which is supposed to be made with chervil, was a parsley soup this year. Our local grocery store does not carry chervil.
Unsere Gründonnerstagssuppe, die man normalerweise mit Kerbel macht, mußten wir mit Petersilie machen, da unser Lebensmittel im Nachbarort Kerbel nicht kennt.
And then the new stove came! It is quite modern looking. There was not a big selection when we ordered a new one: The Home Depot in the next bigger city only had a few gas ones in stock that were not too expensive and that had the right dimensions. This one was on sale. We tried it out right away and baked Hot Cross Buns for Good Friday. The oven has a "proofing setting": You can put your buns in it to let them rise at a constant temperature. It worked really well. Thanks so much to my father who provided us with this new stove. Now we can bake again!
Und dann ist der neue Herde gekommen! Er sieht sehr modern aus. Es gab keine große online Auswahl bei dem einzigen Laden in der Gegend, der auch lieferte. Sie hatten nur ein paar Gasherde, die nicht so teuer waren und dann auch noch die richtig Größe hatten. Dieser war ein Sonderangebot. Wir haben ihn gleich ausprobiert und damit unsere Karfreitagsbrötchen gebacken. Man kann den Ofen sogar so einstellen, daß die Brötchen in ihm gehen können, bevor man sie bäckt. Diese Funktion hat sehr gut funktioniert. Ganz lieben Dank an meinen Vater, der uns zu diesem Herd verholfen hat! Jetzt können wir wieder backen!

Hello dearest Eva, your stove is sehr toll! All of you must have had so much fun baking the hot cross buns. I love that there is a proofing setting! (I'm going to try and make hot cross buns tomorrow. I didn't have all the ingredients today until Chanda went shopping for us in the late afternoon.) I did make a very nice dinner of frozen cod fish fillets and sticks with a honey mustard dip, carrots and potatoes. We usually have fresh cod fish with a mustard butter sauce for Good Friday . . I had to improvise a little!
ReplyDeleteI've actually never seen chervil in the stores here. Do you normally find it at Wegman's? I think I would have to grow it on the windowsill, in order to have some for a Holy Thursday soup.
You got quite a bit of snow! It looks very pretty coming down, and you must have been cozy in the house, but I also know you must be tired of it.

I really had to smile at your first sentence :). So far, the stove is working very well. Preheating the oven took only about three minutes! I thought that was really fast. Your fish sounds good! We had tilapia with a lemon and orange juice butter sauce (baked in the oven) with rice, carrots, and asparagus. It is hard to get fresh fish right now. Our tiny grocery does not carry fresh fish at all.
DeleteI have used mostly dried chervil in the U.S. I think we had fresh chervil when we lived in NC for a year. You can buy it in England and Germany, though. I don't think Wegmans sells it.
Yes, it was cozy inside. I only went out once to look at the snowmen. I did not go for a walk today, I did not feel like it. It was not inviting.
The cat came once, but Peter told it to leave. Yes, we enjoyed our trip to Switzerland! It is hard to find a Mass that is live in Europe and not at a crazy time here. Peter found this one. I do miss the German language on church feasts.

ReplyDeleteDanke! Er kocht auch gut. Ich koche am liebsten mit Gas, obwohl ich gar nicht so aufgewachsen bin. Die meisten Herde hier sind Gasherde. Wir hatten hier heute Sturm mit Stromausfall und es soll wieder schneien. Ich finde, das reicht jetzt mit dem Schnee.
DeleteJa das kann ich sehr gut verstehen, es schlägt auch irgendwann auf die Laune, diese Kälte. Hier ist es auch schon wieder ein Hin und Her. Über Ostern 26 Grad und wirklich heiß und jetzt schon wieder an die 12 Grad und Regen.
