Homeschool Connections

Charlotte is taking a class on The Odyssey through Homeschool Connections.  Her first class was today.  Joseph Pearce is her teacher.  I heard him speak at a homeschool conference in Buffalo many years ago.  She had to read the first four books for today.  Unfortunately, she cannot take any literature classes through CenterForLit.  Those classes were such a blessing for Jonathan.  But the time difference do not allow us to do them this year.  So this is the first time we are trying Homeschool Connections.  So far, we like them.

Jonathan is continuing chemistry through our college (General Chemistry II).  The professor made a special arrangement that he can get credit for the class even without the lab.  He did so well and the professor was so impressed by his performance last semester that she offered this set-up for him.  He will take the National Chemistry Exam at the end, just like he did last semester.

Tomorrow, our honors students will arrive.  Then there will be lots of work to do.  And on Sunday we hope to meet Chanda!

I have taken no pictures today, but we walked to a stationer and bought some supplies today.  We stopped at the library, but it was closed for the afternoon.

Jonathan and Charlotte have been gone on their own several times, looking for a place to take ballet lessons.  They have tried two studios, but so far have not found anything they have liked.

We also had the plumber here (who takes care of the furnace as well).  He is going to buy a new thermostat for a part of the boiler and hopes that will make the upstairs warmer.

I spent most of my evening grading students' assignments on Moodle.  My first Skype class did go well, although the connection was not so great.  We have been reading the Town Musicians of Bremen.  I asked the students to read the text with a partner (in German) and act out what they were reading.  They really liked that and had lots of fun!  This is a class that really likes acting.

I found a very simple German song about the Town Musicians for them last week.  They were humming and singing the song when we connected with Skype.

    1. So far, they have not been able to find one that will work out. Too many problems with times, style, or money. Kind of frustrating for them. I am glad you liked the video. The students did too :).

  2. Hello Eva, I'm glad your class went well on Skype, and Jonathan and Charlotte are doing well with computer courses too! How does Charlotte like the Odyssey? That's great that Jonathan does so well with the Chemistry. I think Chanda tried a studio called Pineapple today that her ballet teacher recommended to her. Is that one that they've heard of?

    1. I think she likes it, she also likes the teacher. I think it is amazing that he is doing so well in chemistry. His great-grandfather was an important German organic chemist . . . Maybe he inherited it? He sees it as a challenge to grow in an area he is not so comfortable with. It is hard for him, but he likes to try to overcome the difficulties he encounters.

They looked at "Pineapple," but did not think it would suit their interests. It is hard to find a studio that accepts drop-ins that want to pay on a week-by-week basis. They also prefer the Russian ballet style and the only full Russian school is too expensive for us. And communication with these schools/studios is somewhat strange. They never seem to read e-mails or understand phone conversations. There is never a clear answer to questions. It took Jonathan several e-mails with one school he was interested in to make them understand that they are here now and are not planning to visit in the summer. Even after a trial class somebody thought they wanted to come in the summer! What do you do with people like that?!

Vielen Dank!
