Soho and Bloomsbury

St. Patrick's Church and Father Alexander Sherbrooke
St. Patricks Kirche und Pfarrer Alexander Sherbrooke

Sundays are days where we all have time to do some more touristy things.  We tried St. Patrick's Church in Soho for Mass.  This church is right at Soho Square, a little park with an interesting history.  The church itself had a beautiful Mass.  The pastor of the church, Father Alexander Sherbrooke, talked to us after Mass.  He is quite interesting and was very friendly.  Here is an article about him and his church (apparently Fulton Sheen used to say Mass here when he traveled), and here is one by George Weigel in "First Things."

St, Anthony talking to the fishes.  I took this picture for Flora.

Then we had lunch and went to the British Museum.  I am using the old book The British Museum for Young People with Miriam and Veronika to explore the museum. We are doing one period/chapter at a time.  Of course, the museum has changed, but the style of the book is so engaging that it does not matter that you have to walk around a bit to find the things the book is talking about.  Charlotte is using A History of the World in 100 Objects in addition to her Western Heritage online (and free) course by Hillsdale College for her wold history studies.  There are also great podcasts that go with the 100 objects here.  All the objects in the book can be found in the British Museum.

You cannot enter the museum through the main doors anymore (what a shame, that entry is just really, really impressive) due to security reasons.  But here is the side entry.

One of "Charlotte's" 100 objects: a reliquary with one thorn of the Crown of Thorns.

The thorn is in the window right in the middle.

You can listen to a podcast about the thorn here.

And today, somebody turned 14!  This somebody already celebrated her first birthday in London and also learned to walk in London.

Unfortunately, I have a really bad cold.  We did celebrate Miriam's birthday, though.  I will upload the pictures tomorrow.
