Cuttlefish/Kuttelfisch


Veronika is doing a block on animals right now (and also one on grammar at the same time).  Here is her drawing of the cuttlefish.

Veronika macht eine Tierepoche.  Hier hat sie ein Bild von einem Kuttelfisch gemalt.  Gleichzeitig macht sie eine Grammatikepoche.  


We are using the Humpties (out of print, but there is a free online version of it here) to practice learning the different parts of speech.

Und wir benutzen ein besonderes Kärtchenprogramm, um die Wortarten zu bestimmen.  Es wird nicht mehr aufgelegt, aber man kann es auch im Internet hier als online Programm finden.  



We read a wonderful picture book on the world of the old-growth Douglas Fir today.  Friday is our nature picture book day.  The book is called Ancient Ones.

Als Naturkundbilderbuch gab es heute eines über die alten Douglasien an der amerikanischen Westküste.  Es hat wunderbare Bilder und einen sehr interessanten Text.  

And here you can see Jonathan drawing a sponge (prepared slide) after looking at it under the microscope.

Und hier sieht man Jonathan wie er ein Teil eines Meeresschwammes unter dem Mikroskop ansieht, um ihn dann zu zeichnen.  



Today I had an interesting discussion about Germany and homeschooling with my German students.  We are studying the German education system and my German book mentions that homeschooling is not allowed in Germany.  The majority of my German students was homeschooled and so it is interesting for them to encounter a country that does not permit this.  They were speculating why that was the case.

Heute hatte ich eine interessante Diskussion über Deutschland und das Verbot des Hausunterrichtes mit meinen Deutschstudenten.  Unser Deutschbuch stellt das deutsche Erziehungswesen vor und ewähnt dabei auch, daß der Hausunterricht in Deutschland verboten ist.  Die Mehrheit meiner Deutschstudenten ist zu Hause unterrichtet worden, und so ist das für sie besonders interessant.  Wir haben für Gründe gesucht, warum das so ist.    

And Flora got carried away when doing her math: It became an artistic exercise for her.

Und Flora hat ihre Mathelektion in eine Kunstlektion verwandelt.

  1. Here's a Smithsonian article on the old growth forests. They're so mysterious and beautiful! I like the book you posted. I don't think we've read that one.

    It's nice to see everyone's work, and to see Jonathan drawing his sponge :) Flora's flowers are very pretty.

    1. Oh, thanks so much, we will look at it tomorrow! The author has written more books on nature. They all look very nice.

      You know, Flora gets really carried away with the coloring part of the math workbook. She later added rocks, bunnies, green grass, etc. I think to her it is a drawing exercise. She does not care about the math very much.

    2. She has a very full and fun imagination! So creative :) Maybe she's absorbing more of the math than you realize . . !

    3. I hope so, she is still getting confused with all numbers above 5. She can do the math, but she cannot remember what the numbers look like. Same with the letters. She simply does not remember their names, but does remember the stories we did for each letter.

    4. I think it will come with time . . . I'm always amazed at how much I understand of the world now that I'm older . . concepts I could not wrap my mind around when I was younger . .
