German Day/Deutscher Tag

Today was the German Heritage Day at the Genesee Country Village and Museum.  We had to leave really early to arrive by 9:15 a.m. at the museum because Jonathan and Charlotte worked as volunteers again.  After dropping them off at the museum, we drove around the area a bit because the museum did not open to the public until 10:00 a.m.

Flora is petting Lewis, the museum's cat, while waiting for the museum to open.

Our first stop was an English reading of the German story Max and Moritz.

Then we found Jonathan chatting with a co-worker.  His job today was to sell German meals and beverages.

Charlotte was helping with the hot chocolate making (only hot water and slightly sweetened cocoa powder) and with distributing it among the visitors.

My three girls really like this music.

  1. Wow, what a great day. I don't know where to start with my comments. Everything looked so wonderful. I would love to have joined you with my mom and my Aunt Evie. This is an event they would love to visit. Was the food free, or did the people purchase it? It looked very good . . marzipan, potato pancakes, chocolate . . all favorites! Those horns are amazing! Where do they keep them all year? Do they come apart?

Charlotte's dress and apron are very pretty. And is Veronika's dress one we sent you? It looks like one the girls wore :)

The Scherenschnitte were well done. Were they difficult to do?

What a great day Eva! Even the rain was nice. Everyone must have slept well :)

    1. Some of the food was free, potato pancakes, apple sauce, sauerkraut, wine, hot chocolate, but the real meals had a price tag. Those horns do come apart. I was wondering the same thing: How do you store them. Peter found out that a cheap costs about 1500 dollars, but many of them cost 5000 dollars!

I am not sure if that dress from you a not. I will ask Veronika.

The one Miriam and Veronika tried (the heart) was difficult. I helped a bit with Flora's cat. That was not too bad, but she could not do it all by herself.

Yes, they were all quite tired when we finally got home.

  3. Dear Eva!
The German heritage day looks wonderful! Do your children know the German folk dances? I am still looking for good resources to learn and teach the folk dances to my daughters.
    Blessings and love, Barbara

    1. It was beautiful, but no, they do not know them. There are so many different folk dances. Each region has special ones. Let me see if I find some sources and I will get back to you.

      Love to all of you.

Hm, lecker.

  6. I really enjoyed your photos and visiting the German Fest vicariously! Your children are simply lovely, it is a pleasure to see them grow. How fun that you can be involved in cultural events from their own heritage. My husband and I were commenting, while having a great time at the Greek Fest this weekend, how the French did not do this thing in foreign lands. There is no greater community or smaller communities of French, they tend to hide from each other rather than assemble. I wonder if I could import a few horned cows and a bull or two and organize something...or perhaps there is a reason we don't try to duplicate French festivals.

    1. You know, I think you have to go to Quebec to get the same experience. There is also a large French community in Alberta and British Columbia that is proud of their heritage. Rochester did celebrate "Bastille Day" in July by the way. Maybe because it is close to Canada?

There is an Alliance Française in the U.S. Even Iowa has its own chapter:

      Alliance Française de Central Iowa
      Présidence : Mme Parady Boatwright
      4425 Mills Civic Parkway, # 1406
      West Des Moines, Iowa 50265
      Tél. 515-822-9051

Sometimes places that have a French consulate do offer more cultural events. But maybe French people do not have the same sense of community as Greek and German people do. Just as you pointed out.

  7. Vielen dank et merci!!! You are right about the Alliance Francaise, but they seem to be much more about imparting knowledge (for a fee) about the right way to speak French, a national passion. We shall make a trip to Quebec! (And I will be gracious and look into the Alliance...but it is a 4-hr drive from here.) Thanks!

    1. That is too bad. I am sorry that it is also so far away from you. Is there a college nearby that offers French? Sometimes people are interested there. Quebec is so pretty! Montreal is pretty nice, but especially Quebec City. You would love it!
