Normal Tuesday/Normaler Dienstag

Our Tuesday was fairly normal.  We got up, had breakfast and started our circle time.  Flora said her throat was sore and that she was not feeling well.  So we did things in a more leisurely manner.  Our song during circle time is "Bunt sind schon die Wälder" right now.  Flora and I did spelling, grammar, and then moved on to our main lesson.  Today we learned about cars.  She had to design a futuristic car, a task, which took her mind off her sore throat.  Here is a picture of her car.

  

Unser Dienstag war ziemlich normal.  Wir sind aufgestanden, haben gefrühstückt und mit Kreisspiel angefangen.  Flora hat dann über Halsweh geklagt, so daß wir alles ein wenig langsamer gemacht haben.  Unser Kreisspiellied ist im Moment "Bunt sind schon die Wälder".  Mit Flora habe ich dann Englisch gemacht und danach unsere Hauptepoche.  Wir beschäftigen uns mit Technologie.  Heute ging es um Autos und Flora sollte ein Auto entwerfen.  Das hat sie dann von ihrem Halsweh ein wenig abgelenkt.  Oben ist ein Bild von ihrem Auto.

Bunt sind schon die Wälder

We decided to keep her home from her acting class at the Academy (they do not allow children with sore throats in their schools).  So I did not have to rush so much with getting lunch ready.  Tuesdays are always kind of crazy around here because I have to start cooking around 10:00 a.m.  At 11:00 I have to be on campus to teach and afterwards there normally is not much for cooking because Flora has to be at the Academy at 12:50 p.m.  Our regular lunch time is 1:00 p.m., but Tuesdays we eat much earlier.  I taught my intermediate students.  We are doing temporal clauses right now.  We had a text on the destruction of the town Imerrath in our German book to make room for a lignite mine.  It was heartbreaking to read about it.  After teaching, I had to drive to the pharmacy to pick some medicines.  I then returned and finished cooking.   

Flora ist dann auch nicht zu ihrer Schauspielklasse an der Akademie gegangen (mit Halsweh darf man nicht am Unterricht teilnehmen).  Das hatte aber etwas Gutes für sich: Ich mußte nicht schon um 10.00 Uhr mit dem Kochen anfangen.  Dienstags muß ich das so früh machen, weil ich selbst um 11.00 Uhr Deutsch unterrichte und anschließend nicht viel Zeit zum Kochen bleibt, weil Flora schon um 12.50 Uhr bei der Akademie sein muß.  Normalerweise essen wir um 13.00 Uhr zu Mittag.  Mit meinen Studenten haben wir einen Bericht über die Zerstörung des Dorfes Imerrath gelesen.  So eine traurige Geschichte!  Dann haben wir uns noch mit Temporalsätzen beschäftigt.  Nach dem Unterrichten mußte ich zur Apotheke fahren und ein Medikament abholen.  Anschließend habe ich zu Ende gekocht und wir haben gegessen.  Danach haben wir Wäsche gemacht und dann haben Flora und ein Mittagsschläfchen gehalten.

After lunch and laundry, Flora and I took a short nap.  I then walked to the post office to mail my father's birthday present.  I had tried mailing it on Saturday, but there was a young woman working in the post office, telling me that the American post office does not mail standard packages to Europe anymore, only express ones, and told me I had to pay $42!  I knew that this was not correct and told her that I would not mail my package.  Today, another woman was working there and she only charged me $7.  No talk about that you could not send regular packages anymore.  Flora stayed home from ballet in the afternoon.  Normally I drive the girls on Tuesdays, but since Flora was not going, Veronika drove herself and I stayed home.  We got a phone call from the ballet store that the pointe shoes Flora had chosen could not be sent after all because they were being discontinued.  So I scoured the internet and did find a pair in a different store in the correct size.  I also put together a "health and food order" for Charlotte from Whole Foods to have it delivered to her because she came down with a cold and I thought it would be good to cheer her up.  She did go out and danced and taught, though.  She sent this picture.

Ich bin zur Post gegangen, um meinem Vater ein Päckchen zu schicken.  Ich hatte das schon am Samstag versucht, aber die Postbeamtin am Samstag hat behauptet, man könne keine normalen Päckchen mehr nach Deutschland schicken und man müsse 42 Dollar für ein Expresspäckchen zahlen.  Ich wußte, daß das falsch war und habe mein Päckchen nicht geschickt.  Aber heute war eine andere Beamtin da, die nur ca. 7 Dollar haben wollte.  Das war viel besser.  Flora ist auch nicht zum Ballett gegangen und so ist Veronika alleine gefahren.  Normalerweise fahre ich dienstags die Mädchen und arbeite in der Bücherei.  Es gab auch einen Anruf von dem Ballettladen, daß Floras Ballettschuhe nicht mehr vorrätig wären und wir uns andere aussuchen müßten.  Ihre Wahl wird nicht mehr hergestellt.  Also habe ich im Internet geschaut und dann noch einen Laden gefunden, der noch ein Paar vorrätig hatte.  Das habe ich dann bestellt.  Ich habe auch eine Lebensmittel und Grippemittel Bestellung für Charlotte aufgegeben, weil sie sich stark erkältet hat.  Die wird dann morgen abend an sie geliefert.  Ich habe mir gedacht, daß sie darüber froh sein wird, weil sie sich nicht so gut fühlt.  Aber sie hat getanzt und unterrichtet und das Foto oben geschickt.

I then spent the rest of the afternoon/evening preparing an exam for my students tomorrow.  After Veronika had come back home, we finished reading Tonio Kröger.  It is very cold and wet outside.  Jonathan also said hi.  He is working as a T.A. for a class at Tufts University and has 45 students!  He was grading their work and it was simply too much to do, he said.    

Was vom Nachmittag dann noch übrig war, habe ich für das Schreiben einer Klausur für meine Studenten benutzt, die sie morgen machen müssen.  Mit Veronika habe ich dann am Abend Tonio Kröger zu Ende gelesen.  Jonathan hat auch kurz geschrieben.  Er arbeitet bei der Tufts Universität als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und mußte die Arbeit von 45 Studenten korrigieren!  Das war sehr mühsam.
