Maple Weekend at GCV&M/Ahornsirupwochenende im Freilichtmuseum

We spent our day at the Maple Sugar Festival at the GCV&M.  Veronika and Flora were working as volunteers and Peter and I braved the cold temperature.  The forecast had talked about 50 degrees, but I am pretty sure it never got that warm.  It felt like in the lower 30s and there was a very cold wind blowing.

The museum has not officially opened for the season, but a few houses were open.  Here we are learning about sausage making.

This is the cooper.  These buckets were used to collect the maple sap.

The Shaker garden is quite bare.
Der Shaker Garten ist noch sehr kahl.

Because of the high winds, the trail that shows the history of maple syrup was closed.  You can see pictures of it here, when we walked the trail in 2016.  But they did serve a special coffee, the Ugly Duck.

  1. Brrrr! It looked like a fun day despite the cold, and your photos are lovely (especially the one of the Shaker garden). The girls look so pretty in their dresses. I thought Veronika's dress and shawl were especially nice. Did they enjoy their day? The maple bread looked very good! Did they share the recipe?

    1. It was so cold! I wish I had brought gloves and a hat, but we thought it would be so much warmer. Veronika did like her dress a lot. They had a fun day and there were many people, but the original assignments they had gotten changed when they arrived. Flora was supposed to be at the farmhouse and Veronika was supposed to sell things at the confectionary. Somebody got sick and everything got switched around. They both ended up in the same house and of course, there was not enough to do for two. Oh well, they were with Peggy, whom we know well, and that was nice. Veronika thinks it was a 1-2-3-4 cake, but there was no exact recipe.

    2. I love the name of the cake :) I guess it's measurements are in the name!

    3. Yes, when you google it, you get different recipes. The museum's did not have baking powder in it, but I guess for a modern version, you could add it.
