Heat Advisory/Hitzewarnung

Well, what do you do when there is a heat advisory for the weekend (94 degrees)?  You do not do your routine weekend cleaning, but head for the beach.

Was tut man, wenn es eine Hitzewarnung für das Wochenende gibt (35 Grad)?  Man macht nicht den normalen Putzplan, sondern geht zum Strand.

St. Jerome Library

By pure chance, I stumbled across St. Jerome Library.  They publish a color workbook for the old Voyages in English series.  OLVS sells reprints of the original workbooks, but the color ones from St. Jerome Library do look very nice.  It is not necessary to use the workbooks; the hard cover textbooks are fine by themselves, but if you have a student that is a slow writer, the workbooks could be used instead of some of the assignments in the textbooks.  Cathy Duffy has written about that option here.  St. Jerome Library sells the workbooks on Ebay.       

St. John's Fire/Johannifeuer

Today was a wonderful day for having our St. John's Tide fire.  Jonathan had to work late today, but was able to join us at 8:00 p.m.

Heute war das Wetter wunderbar und so konnten wir unser Johannifeuer machen.  Jonathan mußte heute die Nachmittagsschicht machen, aber um 20 Uhr war auch er wieder zu Hause.  

 There were cherries, cherry tomatoes, Mediterranean potato salad, green bean salad with pine nuts, and cheese cubes.

Es gab Kirschen, Cocktailtomaten, mediterraner Kartoffelsalat, grüner Bohnensalat mit Pinienkernen und Käsewürfel.

Art Exhibition/Kunstausstellung

Happy St. John's Day today!  No fire for us, it has been raining for two days now.  We might be able to have our fire on Tuesday (if it gets dry).

Alles Gute zu Johanni!  Wir haben kein Feuer gemacht, da es schon seit zwei Tagen regnet.  Vielleicht ist es ja am Dienstag trocken, dann können wir das nachholen.

Well, I guess after such nice weather on the first day of summer, we needed some rain today.  This day started out with hummingbirds coming to the feeder and Julius bringing a baby bunny for breakfast.  Jonathan and Charlotte had just left, it was about 7.00 a.m., and what do you do?  We put it into a box and gave it some water.  I knew there was a rehabilitation lady in the area, but could not find her contact information anymore.  Peter has taken quite a few bunnies to her; all of them "played with" by Julius.  However, I had never been to her house.  I e-mailed our home ecology teacher if he knew her address and he did!  So I sent her an e-mail and she told me to bring by the bunny.  I put bunny and three children into the car after I had cleaned up the mess that Kai had made in the children's bedroom: He must have had eaten something that did not agree with him because I found it on the floor.  Well, we drove through the backwoods of Western New York for 30 minutes on dirt roads until we finally came to our destination.  The lady was happy to take the bunny and said she would start it on antibiotics right away.  Julius had left some teeth marks on its neck.  Then we made our way back home and tried to get into some kind of rhythm again, but that did not last so long.  In the afternoon, I had to make copies on campus of our papers for the local school district and then rush to the post office (they close at 3:45 p.m. every day now) to mail it all.  The postmaster told me, when she saw my envelope, that the superintendent of the school is going to take a different position soon and that we would get a new one.  The post office is always a good place for the latest news! 


Nach so einem schönen Tag gestern, mußte es wohl heute regnen.  Der Tag hat mit Kolibris angefangen, doch dann kam dazu ein Babyhäschen, das Julius zum Frühstück brachte.  Jonathan und Charlotte waren gerade zur Arbeit gegangen und es war 7.00 Uhr.  Was macht man da?  Ich habe das Häschen in eine Kiste getan und mit Julius geschimpft.  Dann haben wir ihm (dem Häschen) Wasser gegeben.  Ich wußte, daß es in der Gegend eine Dame gibt, die sich um solche verletzte Tiere kümmert, doch konnte ich weder ihre Adresse, noch ihre Telefonnummer finden.  Da habe ich eine Email an unseren Lehrer von den Naturkundeklassen geschickt, der auch sofort mit den nötigen Informationen zurückgeschrieben hat.  Peter hat schon öfter Tiere zu dieser Frau gebracht, doch ich war noch nie da gewesen.  So habe ich meine drei Mädchen plus Häschen ins Auto gepackt (vorher mußte ich noch kurz den Mageninhalt von Kai im Kinderzimmer aufwischen, da er wohl etwas Schlechtes gegessen hatte) und dann ging es über Schotterstraßen eine halbe Stunde lang durch New York, bis wir das Haus der Dame erreichten.  Sie erwartete uns schon und sagte uns, sie würde dem Häschen gleich Antibiotika gegeben, weil es kleine Bißwunden am Hals hatte.  Wieder zu Hause angekommen haben wir versucht, einen Tagesrhythmus zu finden, aber am Nachmittag mußte ich die Unterlagen für die Schulbehörde fotokopieren und dann wegschicken.  Die Post macht jetzt schon immer um 15.45 Uhr zu, so daß man nicht viel Zeit hat, dorthin zu kommen.  Die Postbeamtin hat mir aber erzählt, daß der Schulleiter, an den mein Umschlag adressiert war, bald eine neue Stelle antritt, und wir einen neuen Schulleiter bekommen.  So eine Post ist doch wirklich für Lokalnachrichten unübertreffbar.
