Yesterday was quite a busy day for us. Peter left early to go and teach. He almost did not make it because all his trains had gotten canceled. We also left early because the cleaning lady was coming. Our first stop was the Brompton Cemetery, a cemetery with about 200,000 graves.
Gestern war hier wieder viel los. Peter mußte früh weg, um zu unterrichten. Er hätte es beinahe nicht geschafft, weil seine Züge nicht fuhren und er sich eine andere Strecke und andere Verkehrsmittel suchen mußte. Wir sind auch früh weggegangen, weil die Putzfrau kommen sollte. Unser erstes Ziel war der Brompton Friedhof, wo ca. 200.000 Leute beerdigt sind.

There was a grave of a distant relative to the one that created Letchworth State Park in New York.
Wir haben ein Grab gefunden, wo ein Edward Letchworth beerdigt war, ein Verwandter von dem Letchworth, der den Naturpark in New York gegründet hat.

The main reason we had come to the cemetery was to find the grave of the author G. A. Henty. Veronika is reading the Cat of Bubastes by him right now.

It was an interesting exhibition, but you were not allowed to take pictures of all parts.

Back outside, we took another tube to get to the Millennium Bridge, which is very close to St. Paul's Cathedral.
Mit einer anderen U-Bahn sind wir dann zur Millennium Brücke gefahren, die nahe an St. Paul's Cathedral liegt.

On the other side of the Thames, we went to the Bankside Gallery to see the Broderers' Exhibition. All "pictures" were embroidered.
Auf der anderen Seite der Themse, haben wir dann die Bankside Galerie besucht, um die Broderers Ausstellung zu sehen, eine Stickereiausstellung. Alle "Bilder" waren gestickt.
Flora told me which pictures I should photograph. Remember, all you see is embroidery.

All pictures were for sale, some were £ 65, others were £ 30,000!

After all these exhibitions, we took the Thames Link home. We were still without hot water, but at 8:00 p.m., somebody finally came and fixed the problem. That person was even harder to understand than the guy who had fixed the light, but he did the work. He talked to himself all the time while doing so (using not the best language) and was a bit odd, but friendly.
Nach unseren Ausstellung sind wir dann mit dem Zug nach Hause gefahren. Wir hatten immer noch kein heißes Wasser, aber um 20.00 Uhr ist dann jemand gekommen und hat alles repariert. Man konnte ihn noch schlechter verstehen als den Elektriker, aber er hat die Arbeit getan. Er hat die ganze Zeit mit sich selbst geredet und dazu viele Schimpfwörter benutzt, aber war sonst sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit.
Morgana has give similar accounts of worker personalities :) So many amazing things to see! The embroidery was just exquisite. I could not pick a favorite. I loved them all!
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting that there was a Letchworth relative in the cemetery. The NY State Dept. of Conservation's instagram account had a very pretty photo of blue jays in Letchworth park yesterday . . funny coincidence :) xoxo
Maybe it is a London thing? Yes, there is always something new to discover. There were many more embroidery pictures and all were so different. How much work must have gone into them! I sent Jonathan a few of those pictures (the bird ones) and he liked the robin best.
DeleteThere is even a Letchworth village here. That is where they all came from and most of them were Quakers, like "our" Letchworth in New York. I saw the picture, how pretty and so many together.
The paper house was very interesting and I agree with the Dorina the embroidery exhibition was stunning. Not all British workmen are incoherent and use flamboyant language! However those that do usually have a heart of gold - we’ve recently had a ramp and replacement back door to make it easier for Dave and the chap doing the work admitted he’d been a real rogue as a youngster (in trouble with the police etc) but eight years ago his 17 year old brother died in a motorbike accident and from then on he started to turn his life around. Glad to read that your water problem is finally fixed xx
ReplyDeleteI think it was the model of a real house. I know that not all workmen are like that, but I do think Americans are much more sensitive to "bad language" than Europeans (and I am speaking as a German observer here). Anyway, Jack was back last night and worked from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. to fix the shower upstairs because it had been producing only boiling hot water for weeks and yesterday morning it was only lukewarm. He had to replace many parts and do some drilling and hammering in our backyard to make things fit. He has a key to the house (as have many other people) and we knew he was coming. We were gone when he arrived, but later he told us about himself a bit and also about what he normally does (as his real job). He has some learning and behavioral disabilities he told us about, which cause him to talk the way he talks and act the way he acts. You never think in detail about the kind of lives other people have had, correct? Interesting that your repairman managed to change his life. We once had a repairman at home, who was suffering from PTSD and had to go to therapy in Buffalo once a week. I think he had fought in Iraq. I hope that the water thing has been fixed now. Our repairman will come back next weekend to do something with the fire alarm system.
