A bit cooler/Ein wenig kühler

It has gotten a bit cooler today, so we do not feel completely paralyzed.  Peter taught his first classes today and I taught my German tutorial.  Our college has gotten rid of ALL modern languages.  Students can only learn a foreign language if they pay extra for a tutorial.  I am teaching one of those, with one student!

I also met with Flora's summer art teacher to collect some of Flora's artwork she has made over the summer.  Then, Flora and I drove to the library to pick up some books and after that, we went to buy some new thank-you notecards.

I did not take one picture today!  I have been putting books on hold at the library to have them available next week.  I like to read a picture book during lunch and parts of a longer book at night after supper.  Some of the books we are going to read are from booklists found in Core Virtues, a fantastic book if you are looking for some ways to include virtue readings in your homeschool.  I am also adding my books for next school year to the Simply Charlotte Mason Organizer.  I have used it for a year now and am quite happy with it.  It makes our homeschool run more smoothly.

  1. We've been so happy that it's cooler also. I think it must be nice to work with one tutorial student (one on one) . . but it must feel strange to not have more! I don't see how they could not have any languages, however. Did they let many teachers go? I suppose they prefer paying teachers part time . .

    1. Yes, it is much less work and the student is an older graduate student, so much more mature :). Yes, it is crazy that they cut all the languages, especially with no warning whatsoever! Our department chair had no say in this. And this college is supposed to be a liberal arts college. Pretty soon we are just a glorified trading school. They had just hired a new French/Spanish professor. He was so upset! They were going to transfer him to some Christian center within the college and also cut some of his hours. His wife was a new hire in education, both of them are former students from here. He is going to Spain now to teach English. He was not going to be pushed around. I am only an adjunct, so I don't cost the college much and I don't get any benefits (health insurance, pension plan, etc.). However, they have been trying to get rid of all adjuncts as an easy way to save money because adjuncts don't have any job security. It is easy to get rid of adjuncts, but not so easy to get rid of a tenured professor. The music department is really hard hit by the loss of German and French because the voice students have to take both languages. They have not decided how to cover the languages. So it is not really a question of part-time or full-time, but of tenured vs. untenured positions. All small colleges are struggling to get enough students because there are simply fewer students these days. The first thing colleges get rid off are the languages! Next comes art and music. Very sad!

    2. I feel so surprised, and I think it is sad. I don't know what else to say. Part of me is wondering how they could restructure themselves, to still offer a full curriculum . . ?

    3. I think it needs a visionary person to do that. We did get a new president, so we will see what will happen next.

  2. Yes, visionary. That's a good way of putting it. Good luck with the new president!

    1. Thanks, I have not met him personally, but Peter says he has given some thoughtful speeches.
