Moodle, JSTOR, Centro, CourseSmart, Cengage Brain, Access Code

Well, Moodle was down yesterday, but it is up and running again (I'm very relieved, how can you assign your homework without Moodle these days!), I cannot remember our college's JSTOR password (Too bad, I need to find this one article about a textbook!), Centro is new to me, I just created an account (I hope I will remember the password!), CourseSmart is like Cengage Brain (one is from McGraw-Hill, the other is from Cengage:: I am sure you were dying to find that one out), and there are oodles of access codes in my life right now.

If you think I have gone crazy, maybe you are right.  When I started teaching German at the University of Missouri we had one textbook and one workbook.  THAT WAS IT!! No Moodle, noodle, oodle, ...   Now you need all these extra access codes, sites, log-ins, student versions, instructor versions, etc.  And don't dare to try comparing textbooks, oh no, that is even more complicated because each publisher has its own Moodles, noodles, oodles.  Pretty soon I will have accounts with each one of them (I am just kidding), it just feels that way.  As you might have guessed already, textbook forms are due by the end of the week and midterm grades are due by either Tuesday or Wednesday at midnight.  Maybe I should check my academic records e-mail in my college e-mail to find out because Peter doesn't remember either. He relies on me for those deadlines.  (By the way, even my college e-mail account now needs a new password every six months).

But again, I am so thankful that Moodle is working again and hope it will not let me down again :).

  3. Oh my goodness. This is all so confusing to me. I really prefer one textbook and one workbook. Hats off to you, Eva, for figuring it all out, and working along with it. I've never heard of any of it and I'm assuming it provides extra lessons for the students?

For the Gaps, I ordered an online cookbook to help us get started. We're working through the beginning stages quickly. The book suggests a week, but a friend of mine who went through the diet has suggested that we move through the intro as quickly as possible. I'm finding that the important part is to make sure and drink the broths everyday, and preferably three times a day.

    1. Believe me, this whole system is driving me crazy!! I am pretty good at using all those things, but I do not think they really help students learn more or better. I think they make it actually worse. You know what used to be a language lab is now all online. All the audio parts to each textbook are now online, but you have to buy an access code. This enables you to watch videos, listen to the audio files for your lab manual, play online vocab games, practice your grammar, etc. However, many of the exercises don't work quite right, or have the wrong number, i.e. they don't match your workbook, etc. That is really annoying. You pay $100 for this and it only works so-so. You can also get the whole textbook and everything else online. You are then sitting with your students in class, each person has a screen in front of him or her. I am not doing that. I hate that. But I have to work with all those online parts. Moodle is a college program that enables professors to post course notes, etc. online. Actually, I like it because it lets me post videos I find quickly and I also post my homework there. Only my students can see the German stuff, but the other professors can post things for their courses. But I don't think it is necessary either and I like to make fun of it.

When I did this program I used the original book "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." I found it very helpful and down to earth. I still eat similar to what is suggested in that book, but I do have modified it. I never drank so much broth, though. I think the original book didn't do any of the stages.

  4. Ich glaube C. zu hören. Er ist übrigens im gleichen Stress, er muss auch in ein paar Tagen die Noten etc. einreichen.
