In addition I am planning on reading The Story of a Soul with Jonathan and Charlotte. One chapter per week and somewhat more during Holy Week should take us through the book.
The three big tasks for Lent are praying, fasting, and almsgiving. To help with that I still really like Lent for Children that Jennifer Gregory Miller made available for print out. I have several of these and the children like to use the every year. CRS Ricebowl has a wonderful way to save money by eating simple meals and donate the saved money to poor countries. They offer a Lenten calendar to help with this task and you can also find worksheets, prayers, etc., on their site. Also, our diocese has a special Lenten collection and the children have special Lenten offering box. To make these three components visible and tangible for the children I made a Lenten calendar that invites them to draw crosses for each daily sacrifice. This was inspired by many ideas online. Here is Flora's sample. I either let them draw a task for each day from several slips of paper (like "Pray for all hungry people," "Fast from saying unkind words," "Give a hug to your sister," or "Be an invisible helper to the person of your choice today.") or I let them come up with their own ideas (today Jonathan, Charlotte, and Miriam decided to pray the Rosary, Charlotte gave me a massage, and Jonathan helped a lot in the kitchen). During Holy Week we will get out our salt dough crown of thorns and will strive to remove all the thorns by Easter.
I myself want to challenge myself to "40 Days of Mending." I never find time to mend and have piles and piles. So if you don't find a blog entry I might be mending (or preparing my German class). We will see how this goes, I do hope to mend one piece per day, but if I realize that I won't be able to do it, I will just try to mend 40 days, each day just a little bit.
Morning sun on new floor
DeleteFantastic resources and as always you are full of very good ideas. I bet your massage was much appreciated. The morning sun on that new floor looks beautiful, are you able to put back the furniture yet?
ReplyDeleteLove to you
San xx
Thank you, San. Charlotte is a wonderful masseuse. We have to wait until Wednesday to put the furniture back, but the kitchen floor is not done. We are still waiting for the floor to be delivered. We had thought that there was also an oak floor underneath, but that was not the case. Now we will get a cork floor. So another week of living like the pioneers.
DeleteDear Eva,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing more of your Lenten plans! Lent with Jesus book looks interesting. I just bought a wee book called a family Lenten journey with Saint Therese. We are really enjoying it so far. Also we use the Story of the Cross book with a stations of the cross box we made last year for a hands on family stations on Fridays.
Your refinished wood floor is absolutely gorgeous on the morning sun! When do you get to "move" back in?
Take care, Barbara
Thanks, Barbara. The "Lent with Jesus" book is really nice for younger children. It makes Jesus and his country come alive. (It sounds a bit evangelical, but I think that is the key to make Jesus come alive. It was written by a catholic, though). Is your book a book by Ave Maria Press? We do have a few picture books for Lent, but we don't have "Story of the Cross" and the library does not have it either. I do have some other Stations of the Cross books, but normally we just pray the stations in church during Lenten devotions.
DeleteThanks for the compliments on your floor. We get to move back in on Wednesday. The kitchen will take longer, though.
Der neue Fußboden sieht SUPERSCHÖN aus!!
ReplyDeleteDanke, Sybille!
DeleteThe floor looks beautiful. I hope everything goes quickly with the kitchen floor as well. Thanks for the Lenten ideas. I think it would be good to try the Lenten tasks.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dorina. We still haven't heard from Lowe's that the cork floor has come. Once Peter can pick it up, it has to sit for 72 hours before it can be installed. So it will be a while still. Today we will have our big meal on campus at the cafeteria.
DeleteHmmm . . it hasn't been sitting long enough in the box? Or do you mean you need to lay it out and then wait 72 hours to glue it, or whatever it is you have to do?
DeleteI hope you had a good meal on campus! I always enjoy good food cooked by others :)
It has to come to room temperature in the kitchen for 72 hours. It is an interlocking floating floor, no glue!
DeleteThe meal on campus was good. They make you special gluten free food if you want to and bring it to your table.
