Igloos and Foraminifera/Iglus und Foraminiferen

Miriam finshed building an igloo out of sugar cubes, glue, and cotton today.  She also drew a picture of a tule house.

Tule House/Tule-Haus

Jonathan and Charlotte are working on a picture of a few of the fossils found in limestone.  They are making drawings of foraminifera.  We also looked at pictures of caves (Mammoth Cave in Kentucky and Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico) today as part of our review of the rock cycle.

Our new read-aloud is Adventures of Maya the Bee.  This a German classic about a little bee and her adventures mainly with other insects.  This is not a book for really little children, but 8 or 9 years and up is a good age.  If you want to see the German original version for free, take a look here.  To see a complete English translation, click here.

  2. If Benedict had been involved in that task I bet he would have attempted to eat the project!!

We enjoyed the you tube link to the German folksong and have been humming the tune ever since! I even looked at the song sheet link and attempted to rekindle my high school German!

  3. Danke, Sybille.

  4. That's great, San! It's one of my favorite songs. We love to sing it in the car when driving through the fall countryside.

You know, Miriam loves sugar and asked me if she could eat a few. I never allowed more than one or two (we don't eat white sugar, so it was something different for them). Once the cotton and glue was put in place, the fact that it was made out of sugar wasn't so important anymore. Then it was just an igloo.
