The Laundry/Die Wäsche

Mother TeresaWhat do you do  when your husband is gone for several days, 4 to be exact, and your washing machine breaks?  You round up all your children and drive to the laundromat, even though it's a Sunday.  I could not help, but think of Charlotte Diamond's song "The Laundry."  Before doing our laundry, we had a nice breakfast with almond cranberry muffins and went to church where Father preached on giving thanks for little things.  As an example he cited his own childhood -- he was one of ten children -- and his mother, who did so much for him and his siblings.  He admitted that he never gave a thought to where his clean clothing came from, how meals got on the table, and why the house was always picked up, until the day when she lined up all her ten children and told them how much she would like to feel appreciated.  That sermon must have stayed with my older children because they asked me tonight if they had been very helpful today.  After lunch we read the lovely book of Mother Teresa by Demi.  Then Flora needed her nap before we could get all our quarters together and visit the laundromat.  We weren't the only people there, but it wasn't too crowded.  I haven't really been to a laundromat in several years, but they have really changed.  Ours has two TV screens, a vending machine and magazines.  I didn't really care for the "improvements,"  but Jonathan was thrilled to see some car race on one of the screens.  (We don't own a TV).

Our laundry is more or less clean (my own washing machine is better) and the children actually enjoyed their time, reading, playing games, eating, and playing outside in the grass.

My Guardian Dear (Mi Angel de La Guarda): A Story of the Angels (Un Cuento Acerca de Los Angeles)Our evening religious book was a book on guardian angles (October 2 is the feast of the guardian angels, but we like to remember them throughout the month).  Now our family is happy to have daddy back.  Flora learned two new words this week due to his absence: "Kalifornien" (California) and Waschssalon" (laundromat).

Dazu gab es das Buch My Guardian Dear (Mi Angel de La Guarda): A Story of the Angels (Un Cuento Acerca de Los Angeles)

  1. hello eva, we have a laundry room for our apartment complex which i really appreciate. i'm glad i don't have to go to the one several blocks away . . i wonder if they have a tv now? i find it rather disturbing and amusing (!) how tvs have sprung up in public places like weeds. we run into them everywhere in the city. the girls and i have grown accustomed to avoiding them, or ignoring them. it's difficult sometimes. the movement really pulls you in. (we also don't have a tv, though we occasionally watch a movie on the computer).

i love the mother teresa book, and the dwarves and dice. we've played with the latter, i'll have to look for the former! i'm glad your husband is home safe and sound. and i hope your washing machine gets fixed soon :)

  4. Thanks for the link for Holly Pierlot I've saved the file to the computer.

I love your laundry tales and the accompanying pictures! A very clever piece of mother organisation, making the whole trip an event right down to the tea party, learning materials and games. For the sake of necessity and convenience I hope your washing machine is fixed very soon.

    Blessings to you all

  5. Laundry, it never ends. You did so well though and should feel proud of your children!

    Blessings.

  6. Hello Dorina, I agree about the TVs. When we traveled to the Midwest during the summer, we stayed at several hotels. You couldn't eat breakfast without a TV -- having to listen to the most recent atrocities around the world. Our pediatrician, whom we really like, also has a screen in his office. He shows videos, but still . . .

We used to live in an apartment many years ago, which had a laundry room. Unfortunatedly, it was in a different part of the apartment complex. I had to go downstairs and outside before I could enter it. That was difficult, especially with two small children.

Yes, isn't "Dwarves and Dice" a fun game? All our children have liked it so far. The Mother Teresa book is really moving and beautiful --as most books by Demi. Do you know her?

Our washing machine won't get fixed until Tuesday or maybe even later. There will be more trips to the laundromat.

  8. San and Marlis, thank you for your comments. Unfortunately, I will have to wait more than a week to have it fixed. It is a German washing machine, which makes it hard to find a good serviceman for it, especially in our very rural area.
