New Main Lessons/Neue Hauptepochen

Life without a washing machine makes things very difficult if you are trying to accomplish some more things than just laundry.  Our cat seems to like to lie on heaps of clean laundry that have just returned from the laundromat, though (to my husband's annoyance). 

Nevertheless, Charlotte started a new block on geometry.  We'll revisit botany in the spring.  We've been discussing points, rays, and lines so far.  For wam-up, we're doing some freehand geometry. 

Jonathan and I have been reading about the Gauls and just started on the Punic Wars.  For the Gauls we looked at Usborne's Ancient History.  Their art is shown in Art of the Celts.  Today Jonathan started drawing a Gallic warrior.  He's also been writing letters to relatives and friends, in German and English.  His new book for reading time is Pole Poppenspäler by Theodor Storm. 

Miriam started her first math block.  We'll be concentrating on the multiplication tables.  I really like the movements that accompany the recitation of the tables as found in Putting the Heart Back into Teaching. 

Our new read-alouds are Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer (Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver), another great book by Michael Ende.  I'm reading it to Miriam while she knits.  After lunch I read Im Haus der alten Bilder to everybody.  It's a German story about a girl that loves to visit the local art gallery.  Through magic she gets invited into a painting and as a result has many adventures.

Sunrise/Sonnenaufgang

Das Leben ohne Waschmaschine macht es nicht gerade einfach, etwas außer Wäschewaschen jeden Tag zu schaffen.  Unsere Katze mag aber die Berge von frisch gewaschener Wäsche, die vom Waschsalon zurückkommen. 


Trotz all der Wäsche hat Charlotte mit einer neuen Hauptepoche angefangen.  Sie macht im Frühjahr nochmal Botanik.  Jetzt haben wir mit Geometrie begonnen, genauer gesagt mit Punkten, Linien und Strahlen.  Zum Aufwärmen machen wir Freihandzeichnen von geometrischen Formen.   


Jonathan hat sich mit den Galliern und den punischen Kriegen beschäftigt.  Über die Gallier haben wir in Ancient World gelesen.  Die keltische Kunst kann man gut bei Art of the Celts: From 700 BC to the Celtic Revival verfolgen.  Heute hat Jonathan angefangen, einen gallischen Krieger zu zeichnen.  Er schreibt auch gerade Briefe, auf Deutsch und Englisch.  Seine neue Lektüre ist Pole Poppenspäler von Theodor Storm.


Miriam hat ihre erste Matheepoche angefangen.  Wir üben das kleine Einmaleins mit vielen Bewegungsspielen.  Das südafrikanische Buch Putting the Heart Back into Teaching: A Manual for Junior Primary Teachers ist dabei eine tolle Hilfe. 


Unsere neuen Vorlesebücher sind Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer für Miriam beim Stricken und Im Haus der alten Bilder, ein Kinderbuch aus meiner Kindheit, in welchem ein Mädchen in einer Kunstgallerie in ein altes Bild eingeladen wird und dort Abenteuer erlebt, für alle.
