St. Nicholas/St. Nikolaus

This year, St. Nicholas brought some chocolate gold coins!  Here is a wonderful picture book that goes with this legend.

And of course nuts and mandarin oranges
Und natürlich Nüsse und Mandarinen

Some sewing tonight: Miriam is working on learning the basic sewing machine stitches.

Veronika is crocheting a snail.  She has finished two pillow halves.  Now we have to sew them together and add the snail to the front.

One pillow half
Eine Kissenhälfte

Jonathan finished reading the Aeneid in this translation.  He had an online discussion about it with the Center for Lit tonight.

  2. We had very unusual St Nicholas Day this year! The city was on a complete blackout so we improvised with caravan cooking and candles!

    1. This is so American! Power outages happen here so much that you kind of know there will be several ones in the winter. I do not remember them from Germany at all. You were very inventive with the caravan (and lucky to have that).

  3. I love the St. Nicholas book. Thanks for posting about it, and I can't wait to see Veronika's pillow snail. I hope you put up a picture when it's done. Did Jonathan enjoy the Aeneid discussion? I can't remember what translation we used. I'll have to check in Morgana's book . . but tomorrow. I'm too tired tonight!

    1. That was a new one for me too. I am hoping the library will get it. He did, but he thought some other ones were better. They used the Fitzgerald translation, which is apparently very close to the original.
